Good Day's Fishing, by James Prosek

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3-The author of the decidedly handsome adult book Trout (Knopf, 1996) turns his careful pen and deft paintbrush to an equally handsome work for children. Here, a young narrator conveys his love of fishing by describing the contents of his tackle box and identifying the species that each lure is designed to catch. A spinner (for perch), flies "tied from furs and feathers" (for trout), and a variety of hooks ("Aren't they cool?") are among the equipment presented in the very brief text and luminous watercolors. At the end, the child digs out the item most essential for "a good day's fishing"-"my hat." A five-page glossary carefully defines the wide variety of lures portrayed, from spinners to spoons, dry flies to jigs. This title will appeal to readers who enjoyed such offerings as William T. George's attractive Fishing at Long Pond (Greenwillow, 1991; o.p.) and Nina Kidd's suspenseful June Mountain Secret (HarperCollins, 1991; o.p.), but are not yet ready for the complexities of Jim Arnosky's colorful Freshwater Fish & Fishing (Scholastic, 1982) or his personal Flies in the Water, Fish in the Air (HarperCollins, 1986; o.p.). Prosek's book is a special treat that may lure to the surface the ever-hopeful fisherperson lurking in youngsters' inner depths.Patricia Manning, formerly at Eastchester Public Library, NYCopyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist

Gr. 2-4, younger for reading aloud. Prosek is an expert on fly-fishing and the author of several popular adult books, including Trout: An Illustrated History (1996). Here, Prosek offers young readers a beautifully illustrated, simple story about a good day's fishing. In a simple, descriptive text that contains a few humorous surprises, a child describes the many bobbers, hooks, lures, and other paraphernalia he finds as he searches through his tackle box for the one thing he needs to guarantee a successful catch. In the end, though, the boy's lucky item isn't the hooks in his box--it's the hat on his head. The appended lure and fly glossary is well done, but it is probably too detailed for the younger range of the book's audience. Nonetheless, young fishing enthusiasts will certainly learn more about which tackle works best to catch particular kinds of fish, while the wonderfully detailed, gentle watercolor illustrations of fish and gear offer a lovely introduction. Perfect for my 6 year old to read. Realistic pictures and descriptions of what anyone may find digging through their tackle box. Fun and educational.

This is a remarkably beautiful book with illustrations as appealing as you would expect if you know the work of James Prosek. The story is less engaging because it is so simple. So the story itself is an afterthought with no real drama, which may detract for some.It is a nice book to just look at and to introduce young readers to fishing.

This book is a really nice book but it didn't quite fit the ages we needed it for this year. I will either put into my book collection so all of the grandchildren can read it, or use it as a gift later on.

beautiful illustrations

Great children's book. Wonderfully illustrated and easily read. The description of the different lures are true and exact. My daughter loves this book.

I read this book in the book store and decided this was the book I needed to purchase for our son to read to his son. They enjoy fishing on any free day during the summer and this book provides our grandson some good knowledge of fish and equipment.

This is a gentle and loving look at what's involved in fly fishing. It's informative without being too lengthy, and the pictures really make the book shine.

very nice book, nice art work.

Wow. So how do you even explain this book without going on and on for twenty pages. This is the kind of book you need to read a few chapters and then get together to gush or seeth about with friends because there's just SO much!It plays out like a historical, Romanesque or Highland tale, except it's all fictional lands/kingdoms/societies.At first it's hard to stick with who's what - the author starts with a map of the region and a glossary - and it helps. I had to refer back to it a couple times in the beginning but then I had it.Then - it just gets good!Every turn of the page has another twist. At first you think there is nothing useful in Laurent, and then as the book progresses, you begin to realize that maybe there's something redeemable in there, but no matter what, or how hard you try, you aren't going to figure him out because the author does not want you to.Damen is... Delicious and I think he carries all of the hopes for all that is wrong to somehow turn out right. There is some kinky going on all over the place, mostly consensual, but there are slaves in this and societal norms that are also a product of this very creative and intriguing setting so there are a couple non-con scenes involving slaves. As a m/m romance, I wouldn't say that this was particularly romantic but it seems to have set the ground work for something more to happen in the rest of the series. There is some m/m action but not between our two main characters and honestly, I'm so glad there wasn't. I'm actually enjoying the mystery and the fact that these two didn't look at each other and immediately feel "something deep in their core" or "insane lust" or "insert any cliched insta-love phrase" here. But honestly, I don't know that they ever will be any m/m action between them, just a feeling. This story is building, drawing me in and I'm loving every minute of it!

While his father the king lays on his deathbed, Crown Prince Damen is seized by troops loyal to his half brother Kastor, who seizes the throne. Rather than simply kill Damen, Kastor packs him off to be a pleasure slave at the court of Vere, traditional enemies of Damen's people, with whom Kastor has made peace, for now. If anyone in Vere realizes who he is, Damen will be dead. Until then, he has the humiliation of being a slave to deal with.“Captive Prince” is primarily a tale of complex palace intrigue. Damen is thrust into a world where almost nobody is what they seem to be, and everyone seems to be scheming to find some advantage over everyone else. Damen's primary nemesis at court is his new owner, Laurent, a man who has more reason than most to kill Damen if he ever found out his true identity. This first book in a trilogy focuses on building the world that Damen inhabits and setting up the complex relationships of the main characters. In reality, not a lot happens in this book, but by the end you'll have enough to start guessing about what might really be going on, and there's definitely things put in motion by the end to signal more action in the second book. The story is not quite what I was expecting. It doesn't quite fit into the typical forced enslavement fantasy. However, the characters are quite interesting and figuring out the various motivations becomes as engrossing as a good mystery. Damen is the epitome of the “good and honorable” would-be king, while his new “owner” Prince Laurent seems at first to be the classic dissolute evil nemesis and his uncle the Regent a potential ally. Yet, by the end of this first book you may feel that none of the characters is quite what they at first seem to be.

I highly recommend reading both volumes of the "Captive Prince" - and wait anxiously for the third to be published in 2014 (per the author's blog). Fortunately, the end of Volume 2 is a great transition point even while setting some deep barbs to keep you checking back for Volume 3. I found that I reread both Volumes right after finishing Volume 2 for the first time and enjoyed the reread at least as much as the first pass because I was able to enjoy how the story unfolds from an entirely different perspective.I found the author's use of language pleasantly and uniquely different than the usual highly edited fodder from the big publishing houses. I hope Volume 3 is not radically different! As noted elsewhere the character's are enjoyably developed.Based on 20+ years in the military, I think the author shows an excellent understanding of prototype military command styles, how they are developed, how each binds their subordinate fighting forces together and to their will in the face of horror and death, and how successful senior commanders arrange layers of plans, operations, and resources across both time and space while hedging for uncertainty. Like this story perhaps, my own experiences have shown me the common and very similar human side of men who were once my enemies in battle. In truth, brotherhood comes in many forms. There is certainly more than one "Captive Prince" in this tale, each struggling for freedom... and coming to a new understanding regarding the complexity of just what "freedom" implies. For me the books were an easy, straight forward, enjoyable read without being simplistic or obvious. Unlike the "Game of Thrones," there are no jarring transitions across an inflated, gratuitous storyline. Instead, "Captive Prince" drives you on relentlessly towards the culmination of an epic conflict of wills and arms that you know is coming... though not in what form or when.Submission - Command; My Enemy - My Brother; Conflict - Reconciliation; Growth - Death: All these ideas are woven into Captive Prince - between men or even within the same person. In fiction, as in life, there can hardly be one without the otherSo read on, and enjoy.

The book, The Figure in Motion, is an important supplement for your figure-drawing library. There are some areas where the book could use some improvement, but the current edition is still a useful resource. The Figure in Motion contains over 165 full-page, black & white photos of action and motion poses, and eighteen (2 ½" x 3 3/8") insets of drawings of selected poses, drawn by five different artists. The authors have taken pains to light the models in such a way as to obtain a smooth gradation of values in order to provide a good, multi-value reference for body contours. They also chose models capable of the posing feats that they required.Although I prefer to draw and paint from live, life models, live models are restricted to poses that they can hold for an extended period of time. The Figure in Motion provides action and motion poses that a live model would be unable to freeze and sustain. That makes the book a good resource for dramatic poses, for gesture drawing, and for capturing a feeling of motion in one's drawings. In addition to providing a variety of action poses, the book is sprinkled with examples of how one might creatively interpret the poses. For example, author and artist Thomas Easley draws one of the poses as a sword-bearing warrior angel in the sky. Guest artist Wayne Mott shows an easy way to create a strong feeling of motion in a drawing of one of the poses. Wayne Mott and Bob Morgan illustrate two different approaches to contour drawing.Kudos to the author for including a few multi-model and family themed poses at the end of the book. I would like a few more poses along those lines -- especially the types of poses that one might envision Rodin requesting for his sculpting. Most of the photos in the book have white backgrounds with no shadows, giving them a cut & pasted appearance. This may be intended to free the model of context, so that the artist can interpret more freely, or, perhaps, to provide contrast between the model and the uniform, mid-key background that Mark Smith used as a backdrop. However, I would have preferred sharp shadows. I find shadows valuable for grounding the image, and for helping me to better understand the light sources. In an indoor studio session with a live model, I might draw an outdoor scene, using the model's actual shadows across chair, platform and props to guide my drawn shadows across rocks, tree roots and ground contours. The models in the book are, unfortunately, all of similar body types. This not particularly true to life. In the study of figures, it is important to be able to render, interpret and celebrate the variations of humanity.A good example to guide this book to a future, 5-star edition, is the free web-resource, "The Figure Drawing Factory" -- a Yahoo group/forum which is a collaboration of artists and life models that provide a variety of poses, body types, and group projects. ultimately resulting in a dozen or two interpretations of the same pose. Even in light of a free resource such as this one, the book Figures in Motion is still an important resource for that niche of difficult-to-hold, and often difficult-to-photograph, poses. In summary, I would like a future edition to include a greater variety of body types (and skin tones), more examples of interpretive drawings, photos with grounding shadows, and additional poses suitable for dramatic gesture drawings including both single-model poses and multiple-model poses (think Rodin sculptures). In the meantime, I think that the authors have done a good job of filling a needed resource niche, and that you will find this book a useful supplement to your figure-drawing library.

I thought this was going to be more of a "how-to" or a breakdown of anatomy to guide artists in creating more life-like, realistic motion in their images. But this is simply a book full of photos of mostly women and a few men (as well as a few "family" shots) in various poses of motion that artists can either look at to reference or attempt to replicate in their art to get the feel of these types of movement.

The book is okay for what it is- a useful reference for body movement. The book contains two hundred photos of female and male models in suspended action poses. A practical guide for art basics to show a real persons musculature when in certain positions. The critical points made by others are that many photos are "grainy" is valid as well as the fact that the models are lightweight Caucasians. The cover model displays the essence of the book, the human figure in motion. Not a must have for art studies but if one can find it under $10 then buy it.

Amazing book! Figure in motion is essential for fine art students and I don't have words to describe how useful this was for completely my projects!

Useless buy Art Models instead even if its the book version (the disks for Art Models are fabulous).

I wasn't even sure this was still around. Pleasant surprise and great price. Book was in terrific condition.

the photographs aren't of the BEST quality [very grainy], but that didn't really bother me much.the poses are very un-natural and a little forced.there is a lack of male models in this, so if you're looking to use this as a reference book for males i suggest you keep browsing elsewhere.over-all a good buy.

Getting back in to Sketching again great reference.
