I used this book for a grad class project that had to do with building multimedia database system with Ruby on Rails framework. This is the first of the "cookbook" series I ever purchased, so I was a bit skeptical in the beginning. I am very pleased with this book. It has detailed solutions for several of the common problems. I had successfully built a nice multimedia database driven application in a single weekend with this book. Code examples are well presented and it's easy to incorporate it into your application. This is not a beginner's book. If you know nothing about Ruby or Rails, you should get a beginner's book first - I used "Build Your Own Ruby On Rails" by Patrick Lenz [note that this book is available for free download on the web - search for it on Google]. I am very highly pleased with this purchase and I will recommend it highly especially to those who want to get up and running quickly.

Mind the cover banner: "Covers Rails 1.2". Don't forget the publication date: December 17, 2008!"Rails Recipes: Rails 3 Edition" might be a better choice. I probably missed it because I was looking for Kindle books.

I bought a used copy of this book because I needed more references in my learning process. Since the book I got is from 2007, many things are outdated, but still it stands as a good theory support for a beginner.

If you like Cookbooks like I do I highly recommend you get this book. It's not a huge book but it does a pretty good job with what it does cover. I gave it 4 stars because I wish it had more recipies especially with ActionView. Also, I found some deprecated code in the Application Testing chapter. Good Documention and sample code is Rails biggest weakness right now.Neil

When reading the foreword of Rails Cookbook I felt a strong kinship with Zed Shaw, I too have fond memories of the first edition of Perl Cookbook and the way I relied on it once I'd taken the training wheels off. Since that one I have relied on several of the O'Reilly Cookbook series. It is only when I discard the early tutorial and dive in the deep end with a "cookbook" on my desk that I really start to learn proficiency.I felt timorous and unsure when I finished "Agile Web Development with Rails", a marvelous tutorial that introduced me to my first real web development framework (I must have enjoyed it, I just bought the second edition). Since I have volunteered to develop a fairly large and complex web application in Rails I awaited the arrival of my copy of Rails Cookbook with hopeful anticipation and bated breath.Rob Orsini, his fellow contributors (15 in all) and the team at O'Reilly have once again delivered. Compared to the previous titles in the series I've owned "Rails Cookbook" seems to have fewer recipes but as it is tackling an entire application framework and some serious issues, some of the solutions and discussions run a lot longer. The book is targeted at programmers who know something about web development but are early in their use of Rails, though it should be helpful to all Rails developers.The book starts with tackling issues of installation and getting development tools installed in the first two chapters. Despite already deploying a couple of simple Rails apps I found that there was the odd useful tip in these chapters. The book then covers each of the three main sections of Rails; Active Record, Action View and Action Controller. The rest of the book goes on with large chapters on testing, Javascript, debugging, performance and hosting and deployment. Along the way it also covers REST, Action Mailer, security, plug-ins and graphics.The extremely large section on Active Record was to me the most useful. I seem to spend an inordinate percentage of my Rails coding time with Active Record and it contains a large part of Rails power so I appreciated the size of this chapter. By contrast the chapter on graphics is almost entirely unread.It seems obvious that this book should be compared to Pragmatic's "Rails Recipes". The first point of difference is that Rails Cookbook covers installation and setup. The second point is that is 'Recipes' covers Rails 1.1 while 'Cookbook' targets the brand new Rails 1.2. As a project fairly new on the scene Rails is a fast moving target so the six months between the two books makes a difference. Both books have excellent coverage of the various aspects of Rails, with a great deal of overlap. 'Recipes' has more, shorter pieces while 'Cookbook' tends towards longer pieces with more discussion. 'Cookbook' is also more general, with more recipes more likely to be useful in every Rails project you write.The style is different between the two. Here Cookbook comes off second best, it feels as though tightly edited by a number of hands and ends up lacking personality; functional but cold compared to Recipes. The writing, however, is good. It's easily read, at times it feels like a good textbook. The layout is clean, it is easy to find the information you need from each recipe when you want.With almost all "cookbook" style books I seem to be left feeling that a number of the recipes are just a little too obvious and covered well in beginner tutorials. There is some of this in Rails Cookbook, most notably the first two chapters, but overall the book will be useful to any beginner to intermediate Rails programmer. Personally I had a couple of moments where I read a tip and wanted to scream as it demonstrated and explained in a few short sentences and half a page of code what had taken me hours to discover for myself.The "Cookbook" series all seem to be books worth the price and shelf space. This one is no exception. I'd give it three out of five with an extra half for its timely information on Rails 1.2 and would recommend it for all Rails programmers from the absolute beginner through to all but the most experienced. If you already have a copy of 'Recipes' and are happy with it then you might want to stick with that till either volume is updated for the next major revision of Rails, otherwise you will almost certainly appreciate a copy of Rails Cookbook.

I didn't buy this book because I want to stand on a stage and tell stories about my life. I got it to help me create a graphic novel memoir and I wanted some technique on how to take memories from my childhood and to craft them into something that has structure and meaning. I certainly got that, along with a very entertaining book that is full of great tips, fabulous stories, and homework that I've been doing regularly. I read this book with a highlighter in one hand, and a notebook in the other. And all the while I flipped through the pages absorbing his lessons, ideas came to me. I wrote them all down. I located the themes in my own stories. I worked out key points. And I even cut bits. All while reading Storyworthy. It has jumpstarted my own project. Thanks for that, Matt.Matt says at the end of the book that he aims to be entertaining, and he certainly is that. It's a fun read that I would happily recommend to anyone, because we all tell stories, and it's nice to have a little help along the way.

I heard Matt Dicks on the Art of Manliness podcast, (one of my favorites, you should check it out) just last week. I LOVED his concept of Homework For Life and started doing it that very night. I also told my two 30-something grown children to perhaps do the same thing, sending them links to the Art of Manliness podcast and Matt's TedTalk about Homework for Life.Then, I took a DEEP dive myself. I started with the two most recent of the related podcasts from Matt & his wife Elysha, decided to go back to the beginning of the podcasts and started from there, ordered the book from Amazon, decided that 2 days was too long to wait, so downloaded the audiobook right then.In less than three days, I'd listened to the entire book, listened to 2/3rds of the podcast, AND started reading the book itself. Needless to say, I am smitten. I truly wish that there was a Moth or Speak Up venue here in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Since there isn't, I'll be making a pilgrimage up to Hartford sometime next year.

It's winter break. The wind howls outside and I'm cozy but bored inside. So I buy Storyworthy, hoping it'll offer tips to improve my writing.Kill my boredom while improving myself? It sounds too good to be true. And it might be. In an era of blogs-posing-as-books, where everyone wears the guise of a guru, I have no confidence Storyworthy will be $9.99 worthy.Yet, just a few pages in, Mathew Dicks destroys any apprehensions I had. The book is full of actionable advice and solid examples that exemplify the suggestions. My copy is full of highlights I love ok to whenever I take on a new writing project. I even have a "cheat-sheet" with terms like "Elephant" and "Back-Packing" bullet-pointed with definitions for quick reference.While I had hoped to improve my writing, Storyworthy has had a trickle down effect to my conversations and social life.Take it from a serial cheapskate, Storyworthy is worth every penny.

I liken this to Stephen King’s On Writing, which I loved. They both have entertaining autobiographical information and elements of crafting a story, but this book is way more applicable in terms of building actual stories. With that said, even if your end game isn’t crafting stories, Matthew Dicks implements methods of capturing memories such as the crash and burn exercise to storing fresh memories with Homework for Life.This book is chock full of valuable information given in a very charming and captivating way. I would really recommend this book to just about anyone.

I am laying next to my wife of 15 years and taking the extra time to highlight this is a great book. I read chapters to her because I liked the tales. She let me read aloud because she likes them now too. She got to hear why I chuckled and even cried as I read.Matt taught me about present tense, but, location, five seconds, imagery, and dragging folks into a past. I have already started his task and working to improve how I save my thoughts.I love to read and hate to write. I love listening to a great moving story. This books helps me better appreciate a great stories. However, with a bit more practice it might also help me make my stories more interesting.

I heard Mr. Dick's interview on the Art of Manliness podcast and was deeply impressed. So I shared the podcast with my brother, who is writing about his training for the ididarod, and my daughter, who wants to be a writer. Then, I bought this on audiobook and have been listening to it and loving it. I started doing Homework For Life last night and the ideas for stories just kept coming. But so did the insights. The strangest of which was realizing that I need to ask my best friend if he would speak at my funeral. I also started to wonder if secrets of story-telling are like stories themselves, in that maybe there are many, many secrets out there and that in his act of giving them away, Mr. Dicks will probably find even more, in which case I look forward to reading that book too!

This book was life changing for me! So much wisdom and helpful information. Truly one of the best books on storytelling I've ever read/listened to. I bought both the ebook and audiobook because it's that good! The author is funny, so the book is entertaining as well as informative. I could see "Storyworthy" being used in a course on communication. A must read for anyone who functions in the real world or wants to speak from the stage!

Cinda Williams Chima’s Flamecaster is a sequel of sorts to her entire Seven Realms series, although it is not essential that you read the first series before starting this one. It takes place twenty or so years after the events of the Crimson Crown, and while it does not follow the same characters or take away anything from the enjoyment of the first series, it does occur in a chronological, sequential order. Flamecaster follows the story of Han Allister’s (who was the protagonist in the Seven Realms series) son Adrian, who because of certain tragic and unfortunate circumstances, flees from his home and pursues his passion of healing and revenge at Oden’s Ford. He is the son of the Fellsmarch queen Raisa, who is engaged in a war with the king of Arden- a person who is intent on eradicating the line of the Gray Wolf Throne. Adrian s’ul Han must keep his identity secret as he pursues his studies, while also ensuring that the Arden monarch doesn’t hurt any more members of his family.Forgive me for comparing Chima’s two series, but since they are in chronological order, it makes sense that I make comparisons. The Seven Realms series was a triumph: it put Chima near the top of my auto-buy authors list just because it was so magnificent. In content and technique alone, it is arguably one of the greatest young-adult fantasy series at the moment. And perhaps one of the reasons why The Seven Realms just soared above and beyond its peers was due to the tremendous characterization Chima employed. Unfortunately, Flamecaster lacks the level of depth that I’ve come to expect of Chima’s characters.I have always insisted that Han Allister is one of the greatest heroes I have ever read: a former thief lord and murderer, who grew up on the streets in a poverty-stricken area, who is dangerous and lethal but ultimately decent at heart. To make him the hero of the series was a ballsy move, and I admired Chima for it. She does the same in this one: she takes a character who is unlikely to be a hero and makes him the protagonist. Adrian is a healer; he knows very little of fighting or politics or the nitty-gritty of this world torn by strife and war. In the first few pages, I was excited to see who Adrian would navigate through this cut-throat world as a healer, but I found myself sorely missing Han’s level of intellect and danger. Because while Adrian being the protagonist is unexpected, I didn’t feel that he deserved that title. Han was a bad-ass, in every sense of the word. You knew he could do something fantastic with something very little, and it was always believable because of who he was. Yet, Adrian didn’t draw me in.In fact, none of the characters drew me in the way they did in Chima’s previous series. I found myself wishing that the secondary characters were the protagonists instead because they were more interesting. Destin Karn, especially, was a multi-layered character who has something more to him that I’m sure Chima will reveal in the next book. I looked forward to his chapters more than the protagonists’, and that doesn’t sound too promising. Moreover, the romance between the protagonists felt so rushed: they meet, and within a few pages, they’re in love. I don’t think romance is Chima’s strongest feat- it didn’t do much for me in her previous series either, but coupled with the fact that I didn’t care for the protagonists, I found myself skimming much of the ‘romantic’ scenes.But despite all this, Flamecaster is a solid start to the series from a storytelling viewpoint. The world is richer than ever with vivid descriptions and the portrayal of the intricacies of war and politics. We encounter a new area that we hadn’t previously explored in the Seven Realms, and new magic has come into play. The stakes seem to be higher in this series as well, which tells me that there’s going to be a lot more action in this series. But I won’t lie when I say wow, I miss Han Allister too freaking much to be fully invested.

This review might not be coherent. I really loved this story, but it’s complicated. It’s hard to explain. My love for this book is hard to talk about. Bear with me as I try to put my thoughts about this book into words.Flamecaster is one of those stories that has everything I want in a fantasy. This story had many layers, well drawn characters, descriptive world building, magic, dragons, and a promise of more to come. Yes, I did say dragons. There is a bloody dragon in this story! I am scared of dragons in fiction, honestly. Making them seem real is difficult and not everyone can pull it off. *Adds Cinda Williams Chima to the very short list of people that can make a dragon seem real.*The beginning of this book was addictive and the action didn’t let up throughout the story. I loved the descriptive writing and the promise of magic, so I became hooked right away. The writing in this story is amazing. Seriously, I am blown away. The world building is so exciting. We get to see a snippet of the Seven Realms. Ash is in a school in Oden’s Ford, then he travels The West Road with Lila. He makes his way to Ardenscourt. In Ardenscourt, we explore everything from the dungeons to the tower. Meanwhile, Destin gets sent to Deliphi. Jenna is a resident there. Destin is on a mission to bring Jenna to Ardencourt. Then Ash and Jenna meet… (there’s also a map if you want to follow along like I did)Adrian sul’Han (aka Ash) is on a mission to kill the King of Arden. Ash is a mage and the son of Han? (don’t fault me for not knowing who Han is people, I am new to this author)Jenna Bandelow (aka Flamecaster) was raised by step-parents. She was abandoned by her own parents because of a mage mark on her neck basically targeting her. She is immune to magic and everyone is looking for her.Ash + Jenna.Those are the main characters. We also get a perspective from Lila Barrowhill, who is on a mission to protect Ash. She might be my favorite character b/c she is a smuggler/black-marketer. Lila is a bad ass. I want to learn more about her. The other character who gets some attention is Destin Karn. He is a character working intelligence directly for the king. I am not sure how he is going to fit into all of this because his loyalty seems to be to the king of Arden, but we’ll see how he plays out.This is my first book by Cinda Williams Chima, but it won’t be my last. I am looking into getting every single book this author has ever penned and adding it to my collection. I really want to read the Seven Realms series now. Plus, it will give me something to do while I count the minutes to the sequel for this book. Don’t try to tell me not to. I know a lot of people said I couldn’t read The Grisha Trilogy after I read Six of Crows and I did it and enjoyed all of them.If you are a fan of YA fantasy, you need to read this book. That is all.

Ancient languages were deciphered, literatures were compared and scholars were able to speculate on the nature of human cultures both before and after the invention of writing.However, the technologies which allow ancient human genomes to reveal the origins and migrations of peoples are, as Dr. Reich describes, comparable to the invention of the microscope in the amount of light that can be shed on human history and prehistory. While still in its infancy as a science, the genomic research performed by Dr. Reich and his colleagues has already upended theories of human origins from Europe to India with scientifically grounded accounts.The emphasis here is on scientific, in that, unlike debates over literary composition of ancient texts, the accounts of history derived from the genome are falsifiable. One could always sequence the genome of another ancient human and provide evidence that, say, Dr. Reich’s account of a population from the Eurasian steppe invading India around the time of the Vedic writings is not supported.One can read this book simply for its insights into prehistory as it supplies theories, some provisional, to account for all the major peoples of the world: European, South Asian, East Asian, Polynesian, African and Native Americans from North and South America.But one can also read the book for the excitement at the birth of a new science that promises to be as revelatory as the observations from satellites scanning distant galaxies for the origins of dark matter. Not since reading The Double Helix by James Watson, one of the discovers of DNA, have I been so captivated by the story of a new branch of knowledge coming into being.The book is written with a minimum of jargon and is accessible to the scientific laymen. Because of its captivating story and style I would strongly recommend this book to all mature readers. Just as understanding Darwinian evolution is essential to understanding human nature, so too understanding the prehistory of humanity as revealed by our genome will become an essential part of our global modern civilization’s self understanding.

Here is a book that captures the breath-taking changes in genomics and the effect on our understanding of the human past, by a pioneer in the subject. "Who We Are And How We Got Here" provides an explanation of the rapidly evolving technology in layman's terms. Author David Reich then walks the reader through the new theories on how modern human populations came to inhabit various portions of the world. The changes are stunning, with the promise of more to come.For this former anthropology student, the discussion of the populating of Europe and the Americas was particularly fascinating. That process was far more complex than could be taught a generation ago. Genomics is providing levels of detail that simply weren't available to earlier researchers. The author sketches the roles played by various populations of modern humans, Neanderthals, and Denisovans, and their sometimes surprising contributions to the current populations of those regions. The maps and charts are particularly helpful in illustrating the discussion, which can get a little dense.In later chapters, the author "goes there" and warns that future study may reveal differences in human populations that go beyond physical appearance. He is properly nervous about the impact of that information and how it might be misused, but determined to embrace the progress in science. Highly recommended to the general reader.

David Reich's book is generating some controversy for reasons I don't really understand. It is a fascinating exploration of some of the most exciting current research in human genetics. If your ears have perked up when you've heard about DNA being extracted from Neanderthal fossils (or older), this book will satisfy many of your questions. If I had known this was coming when I dipped my toes in genetics in college, would have jumped in rather run for the hills.Another significant point about the e-book.... The Kindle version of this book is the _first_ that I have personally seen where the e-book is noticeably _better_ than the paper. In particular, charts and images that are often produced terribly badly in e-books are particularly good here.

I enjoy and read a lot of history. Until recently, I thought the best we could do in determining things about early human history was to speculate based on the bones and pots found by archeologists. Now Dr. Reich and a growing number of geneticists who are specializing in early (deep) human history are working out the details of early human history in a way that I would have thought impossible even a decade ago. Using human genomes from both modern and from ancient bones they are able to provide details information about human populations and migrations.For example, they can not only tell us that European hunters and gathers were invaded by farmers from Antolia around 9000 ybp, but can also tell us that these early hunters/gathers and farmers were themselves wiped out by later pastorial migrants from the caucaus who spoke endo-european. This isn't speculation, as we are used to in history texts, but based on facts generated by new techniques that let us analyze the genomes of modern and ancient bones. Many fascinating historical questions that I would have thought could never be answered and now answered.This is a must read book for anyone interested in early human history. It's well written and reasonably clear as to techniques involved, etc. For moe detail you would need to read scientific papers being published.

This manual was a disappointment. Too general, very few o.e.m.specifications, low quality paper, and vague procedures. I returned it and ordered a Haynes. Much better. A lot more detailed and more in depth. Odd, as I believe both are published by the same English Co.

Taking care of an aging car requires documentation. Chilton manuals, online repair manuals, online forums and PDF versions of the owner's manual all work together to help me cheaply keep older rides on the road.This manual tries to cover too many Volvo models and therefore is lacking when it comes to illustrations. For example, installing light bulbs is very different on each of the old Volvo models in this book and the one we needed was not included.

I have one of these for my Silverado and it has been awesome, saved me thousands of dollars in repairs. I was hoping the Volvo manual would be equally as good, however was slightly disappointed. They try to cram too many models into one manual, which means each one gets less detail, even though many aspects of the models are the same. My Silverado manual is also much thicker than this one.BUT, if you will be working on your Volvo, I would highly recommend this regardless.

It has some useful knowledge, but it's a Chilton's Manual not a Haynes therefore it is very basic and superficial. Still it's better than no manual, it just lacks detail that a Haynes manual would have contained.

Yes, this book does cover a models, and for that I give it two stars. However, many times I felt like I was doing something wrong. The book can too short sometimes, leaving the reader wondering what to do next.Volvo is a company that needs more car manuals. They make very good cars and it's a shame that most of the better manuals are not sold in stores.If you want to learn more about your Volvo, then get this book along with your dealer's manuals. I also highly recommend Auto Repair for Dummies by Deanna Sclar.

i have a 1990 740 turbo, and there's not a lot of model specific info. luckily most of the earlier models "covered" by this manual are very similar. if you've never worked on a car before, do not expect step-by-step instuctions and therefore do not choose this product. i would recomend the following title instead if you have a 740, "Volvo 740 and 760 (Petrol) 1982-91 Service and Repair Manual (Haynes Service and Repair Manuals) [Hardcover]" by matthew minter

This manual offered only vague directions for repairing the issues my particular V90, 960 Volvo has. The technology used to produce this manual is older then the 1997 car I'm trying to repair, very poor pictures and text that was many times just too broad. Barely worth the the price I paid. I would buy the manual again, but only for the vehicle data and specifications.

While the collection is complete (including each cover), I knocked off a star for the total lack of introductory material on the characters, the production of the title, or Fritz Leiber. The book is printed on cheap(ish) paper but the coloring looks authentic as does the artwork (ie: not overly digitally enhanced). If you are a fan of 70's era S&S or of Leiber's originals you should be happy with this collection.

Nice graphic Novel that does a really good job of graphical telling a number of Fritz Leiber's stories.

I appreciate these stories finding their way into comic form.

In 1973, DC Comics started a new series called "Sword of Sorcery." The first issues were about Fritz Leiber's fantasy action duo, beefy barbarian Fafhrd and scampish rouge The Gray Mouser. They live in Nehwon, "a timeless land, a placeless place, which may--or may not--be of the planet Earth." They are the greatest swordsman of the land and are always in search of great adventures, strong drink, and soft women. Issues 1 through 5 are gathered in this volume.The stories blend fun action with fantasy plots, mostly based on stories by Leiber. In the titular "The Cloud of Hate," the boys follow a foggy mist that has pulled a dagger out of a dead body and is carrying it across the town of Lankhmar. It's Mouser's blade, so naturally they have to get it back. Also, doubtless the fog has stolen more valuable things that they can plunder. My favorite story was probably "Revenge of the Skull of Jewels" with its fun fight scenes and good dialogue. The jewel-encrusted skull of a thief wants to get back to Lankhmar's theives' guild, causing all sorts of complications and horrors.An imaginative diversion, perfect light summer reading!
