About the Author

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar played basketball for the Milwaukee Bucks (1969-1975) and for the Los Angeles Lakers (1975-1989), helping his teams win six NBA Championships. He is the NBA's all-time leading scorer, with 38,387 points. He also holds the records for the most field goals (15,837) and the most minutes played (57,446). Abdul-Jabbar gave the game the skyhook, considered basketball's most classic, and lethal, offensive move. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1995. Since retiring, Abdul-Jabbar has been an actor, basketball coach, and an author, focusing on history. His previous titles include GIANT STEPS, KAREEM, BLACK PROFILES IN COURAGE, A SEASON ON THE RESERVATION, BROTHERS IN ARMS, and ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS: MY JOURNEY THROUGH THE HARLEM RENISSANCE, and the children's non-fiction book about inventors, WHAT COLOR IS MY WORLD?, won the NAACP award for Best Children's Book. "Sasquatch in the Paint" Hits a Grand Slam"Sasquatch in the Paint," written by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Raymond Obstfeld, is the story of Theo Rollins and the tough moments he faces in turning thirteen and becoming a teenager, and while an element of the story is set against the backdrop of basketball, this book hits a Grand Slam.And just as the title foretells, Theo must get into the paint of his life and establish his game there as well as on the basketball court, as he faces major conflicts at every turn. Early in the story, Theo is playing in a school basketball game and his opponent in the paint is majoring in confidence. Theo asks himself what is he confident about in his life, if anything, and knows the answer is zero. And we go from there into the mixed up and confused world of a young teen that climbs a seemingly endless staircase with no elevator to the top, but that is the heart of the journey we take with him.Theo is a thirteen year-old African-American boy at Orangetree Middle School in Orange County, California, a school where only a handful of black students attend, and is populated mostly by Asian students, with a dabbling of America's melting pot mixed in. His father is Marcus Rollins, police officer and widower, thus Theo is without a mother, and his best friend is Brian "Brainiac" Horowitz, a husky boy quick with quips and sarcasm, who is Theo's partner on the school academic team called Brain Train, and who happens to be Jewish.Theo grew six inches over the summer and his height bestowed some attention in the school halls never before given and he likes that, and when asked to join the school basketball team by Coach Mandrake he agrees, and that's where the story begins - in the middle of a game that Theo blows because of his lack of playing skills, as up to that moment Theo had chosen academic achievement over sports.Right then, in the first few pages of the book, the reader knows Jabbar and Obstfeld have crafted an adventure much more than an episodic coming of age tale, and that the story, rich with humor as well as the angst we all faced in our own coming of age, is something far broader, and bigger, and a challenge to stereotypes and prejudices.Theo was called "Sasquatch" by fans in the stands at the first game because of his big feet and his clumsy behavior on the basketball court where we meet him, where he towered above all other players in height, but was the shortest on skills. Rain Kadinski inhabits her own world on her own terms and serves as a catalyst for Theo's life adjustments because of her radical difference in life attitude, a confidence in her word and steps that challenge Theo's insecurities from every angle.And that is how the story develops - with everything we expect to happen being turned upside-down - from Theo on the Brain Trust, to having Brian as his best friend, to being unskilled at basketball to meeting the first girl in his life with any meaning who is that way because of her truthful boldness, to an enraged cousin from the `hood whose song he had written and shared with only Theo had been stolen from Theo's backpack and was now a hit by a major band, to being challenged to a brain match to stay on the Brain Trust, to having his basketball coach pretty well tell him if he doesn't improve he is off the team, to the mystery of Motorcycle Guy and why he hit Crazy Girl, to just who the heck is Crazy Girl, to his dad's secret dating, to the question how does one young teenager even think about finding himself when his world is filled with a mine field of these issues exploding with every step?The characters in the story are numerous and clever, with some given formal names, like Brooke, the self-absorbed diva of the Brain Trust, to others just named by a quality they possessed - Motorcycle Guy, Burrito Breath, Tunes, Fuzzy Mustache, names bestowed by young teens as identifiable enough for the characters they encounter. Nicknames are a very important part of the story, for the story is told through Theo, and his identification of others as no more or no less than the quality they possess is humorous and certainly an of age characteristic we carry with us into adulthood.But just as the title foretells, Theo must get into the paint of his life and establish his game there, as well as on the basketball court, and is forced to face the struggles it will take. Theo's world is shaken when he sneaks a peak on his dad's computer and finds out good old dad is secretly dating a woman he met at an online dating service. And then there's this lack of confidence thing - both his basketball coach and his academic team coach put him on notice to ship up within the week or ship out. And that conflict is drawn so beautifully. We immediately love the academic team, except for Brooke, as they are characters drawn by illustration as likable, and here is where Theo has some gravitas - in knowledge. But the basketball team, outside of one player, Chris Richards, the respected best ball player who possesses Yoda qualities, is one-faceted, with talent with the ball as the only measure. Theo must choose which he wants more, which he can't do, and chooses to succeed in both, which he can't do.Again, the authors have written a story that is multi-leveled:Dialogue is a the diamond that drives the story, memorable and mostly humorous, as humor is the tool used by all age groups to face new ideas and challenges to the comfortable status quo. Humor moves the story forward, and forces us to look within our minds and decide how we are going to handle new conflicts, and a way is to poke fun at those newly discovered conflicts, followed by gradual acceptance.An exchange between Theo and Brian after Theo has lost that first game and blames himself is foretelling of the great juxtaposition of the Brain Train team and the basketball team, and the rich, depth of intelligence not afraid to be displayed by Theo or his friends, but worn as truth, is inspiring to young people to seek the same. This story doesnt' stop at one specialty group for an audience, such as athletes, but challenges young people to go beyond barriers and stereotypes. "I let those punks from Danbury Heights get to me. That skin-color comment shook me."Brian snorted. "Yeah, that's the reason you sucked." Theo frowned at his friend's sarcasm. "You wouldn't understand." "Right, because I'm white. There's no way a chubby white Jew with thick glasses, a wild Jew-fro, and perpetual acne could understand the emotional effects of name-calling. Thank goodness my life has been so full of unicorns and rainbows." Theo grinned. "Then you agree." Brian punched Theo in the arm. "As McLandburgh Wilson said, "The optimist sees the donut, the pessimist sees the hole."And in his first conversation with Crazy Girl that theme is developed in a magnificent exchange of the two on a playground that also foretells some coming conflicts in addition to this one: She saw Theo looking at her jersey. "Dr. J's number," she said proudly. Theo shrugged. He'd heard of Dr. J, but he had no idea exactly who he was or why he was called "doctor." He'd never followed sports of any kind. That was his dad's thing. ...She shook her head in disgust. "No wonder you stink at basketball. You've got no appreciation for the game or its history." Theo leaned down so his face was close to hers and glared. "Yeah? Do you know who Magnus Carlsen, Levon Aronian, and Vladimir Kramnick are?" She seemed to lift up on her toes to return his glare. When she didn't answer, Theo straightened up and grinned. "See? The world doesn't revolve around basketball. There are other things. More important things." She put the basketball on her finger and spun it like a globe. "Those are the three top-ranked chess players in the world. Carlsen from Norway, Aronian from Armenia, and Kramnik from Russia." Theo's jaw dropped open like a cartoon animal's. He was surprised it didn't clunk against the ground. She laughed. "Lookin' smart there, Sasquatch. And early in the story, though Theo doesn't know Rain yet except as Crazy Girl, he goes to her defense though he is no help. At that moment we see Theo as having courage to face his fear of a fight, along with some stupidity, so we choose to side with him and go along for his ride.For adults, the story is so well written, with twists beyond twists, second guesses, mysteries, and the most subtle foreshadowing of amazing happenings in a style that enlists us in the quest, while remembering our own walk through these issues, and checking to see if we have fully handled them, we become Theo's teammates.There are many great and colorful characters in the story, and each one has a major validity, the same as in our lives, where we have people around us we can use for support or use to hone our rough edges, just as iron sharpens iron. Also in Theo's life is Gavin, his tough, in-your-face cousin from the `hood who makes him feel uncomfortable because they have such different attitudes and values. But whose own journey is juxtaposed next to Theo's.Theo grows one small, painful step at a time; he doesn't sprint to self-adjustment, which is just another colorful contrast in a story filled with symbolic contrasts that are a backdrop canvas and never an intrusion into the story.Further, and most importantly, it is a great story, and I don't think anyone can put it down because from the first page we are in a world so brilliantly crafted by Jabbar and Obstfeld. This is no Hardy Boys crime drama; this is a real life story that is captivating and appealing, with all elements of story possessing a charisma that fascinates us and gives us what we want most from a book - enjoyment.How can someone you don't know guarantee you will enjoy this story? It is impossible, but I will do it nonetheless, it is more than an amazing journey, it is a pure delight, a rich novel as big as "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," with some similar themes and poignant moments, this is one story so grand and so big, it seems inadequate to write a brief review, it is a great story that will not only touch young lives, but change them. All that a book can be is fulfilled within the pages of "Sasquatch in the Paint." And yet, it is also a humble story that welcomes us along with Theo and we savor each page until we realize there are no more to enjoy.My hope is there will be many books about Theo, and I will stick with him through the rest of his life, if Jabbar and Obstfeld are so generous as to give us that gift. Theo and company have become to me, the reader, a part of the family. This is a compelling story of boys coming of age in a diverse community. Each faces his own challenges raised by unique gifts and liabilities, and magnified by broken families and pressure from kids at school. This story takes place now, in our current world, and along the way we see how different forces in popular culture influence the choices each boy makes in his life. Nicely written at a level suitable for both middle school kids and adults.

I enjoyed Kareem's book about a boy who was growing faster physically than he was mentally or emotionally. I appreciated the relationship between the dad and son. They learned to hold it together after losing their wife and mother.Feed the "bib" was and funny yet realistic concept that most blacks in America live with everyday.I have a nephew that I thought about giving this book to after reading it. He grew faster that normal too. He is 7'2" at 19 years old. No, he doesn't play basketball because he has many bone abnormalities. That is one thing that breaks his heart, I think.Thanks, Kareem, for an insightful story!

I am absolutely mystified by the overwhelmingly positive reviews of this book by Kirkus and The Library Journal and other readers. Not only is it poorly organized and only moderately well written it, it does not deliver on the promise of its subtitle “Solving Europe’s Ancient Mystery” AND there is evidence of failure on the most basic level of research on this topic.Read instead P.V. Glob’s The Bog People, which although scientifically out of date is a better, clearer and less prurient read? Seriously, how many times do we need to be told that the bodies are naked, humiliated and mutilated or that some have a disability or deformity?Other reviewers have addressed the fact that any natural plant fibers (linen for instance) in the clothing of the bog bodies would not have been preserved and thus though they appeared to be naked they may not have been when they went into the bog. Moreover, some bodies referenced in the aforementioned The Bog People were quite elaborately costumed (see Arden girl and the clothing from Huldre Fen) and or had their clothing interred with them. All of which goes undiscussed in Bog Bodies UncoveredThe most damning omission comes late in the book. “I have a theory concerning the Lindow men” Aldhouse-Green writes and then "wonders" if "there might be an argument” for linking the Lindow bog sacrifices to the destruction of the oak groves on the Druid’s holy island of Anglesey by Suetonius Paulinus in A.D.60. As it happens, there is a very good argument to be made and it has been - by Anne Ross and Don Robins in 1989! How does a “scholar” come to write about Lindow Man in 2015 without having read or referenced their Life and Death of a Druid Prince? In the very next paragraph she states that "Lindow II (Lindow Man) was young and able-bodied and he is likely to have experience in battle." However, as Ross and Robins pointed out "For Lindow Man to have been one of these elite warriors he would have endured at least a decade of arduous training and a further decade of serious inter-tribal fighting before the time of his ritual death. He would have accumulated concentrated webs of scar tissue, calluses from armor, even asymmetrical muscular development from the use of weapons in the preferred hand...Such impressions might have been detected in the highly sensitive scanning that picked up the incipient arthritis, but were nowhere to be seen."Read The Life and Death... if you can get a copy, or go back to the out of date but elegantly written Glob, or indeed anybody else on this subject.

This is one of the worst purportedly academic books I've ever read (and I'm a historian). I don't know where to start, but here's one example: she makes a great fuss over the bodies being naked - several times! - without once mentioning that while animal products (e.g., wool and leather) can survive the anoxic bog environment quite well, bast fibers (flax/linen, nettles) will not. So a body buried in linen clothing with a leather belt would be preserved in a bog environment as a body with a belt. This is one example of both sloppiness and outright ignoring of all the possibilities to wallow in sensationalism. P.V. Glob's book, though now quite old, is much more well written and WITH rigor. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY OR TIME.

Excellent coverage of the bog body phenomena which is found throughout England, Denmark and other boggy northern countries. The archaeology is presented with all the facts they have gleaned from the recoveries. Most met a violent or ritual death. It was first thought that they were a ancient murder but due to discovering that some had ingested possibly a drug besides a ritual meal made up of numerous grains, it began to look more like a sacrifice. Included are the Roman observations about the tribes they had contacted (read fought) who were around to write about such things.The photos are explicit and numerous so it this would bother you, avoid this book.A very superior, well researched book about bronze age religious practices.

This is the most interesting and thorough book I have read on this topic. Very well done. I have always found Dr Green reliable.The illustrations work perfectly in this electronic edition. They are even enlargeable, which is quite convenient. In fact, this is one of the best designed nonfiction ebooks I have read.

Excellent book for one who is obsessed with Bog Bodies (like I am). I love the information about the Iron Age. This book really brings to life the cultural setting in which the big bodies lived and died.

History meets forensic science. A fun read. Lots of human remain photos, so not for everyone.

An excellent read for those interested in the phenomenon of the bog bodies. Well written with terrific insights into forensic, biological and cultural origins of these bodies and how they became archeological goldmines. Highly recommended to learn about these long gone souls.

This book was really interesting and informative. It didn’t feel like a dry read or too much like a text book and I still feel like I learned a lot.

The House of Morgan is truly one of the best written and most interesting histories I’ve read. The strong secondary subject matter is the economic, political and diplomatic history of the United States (circa 1870 to the late 1980s), which actually takes primary stage for much of the book. Chernow had full access to an historical treasure trove of Morgan documents relating to their dealings with U.S. Presidents, nefarious dictators, various and sundry “robber barons,” the Federal Reserve bank, the Bank of England, Continental and Asian state banks, a wide spectrum of politicians from Japan, China, Europe, Mexico and South America — let alone the United States, Charles Lindberg, and a slew of other unusual personages. At its core, it’s a history of high finance, but Chernow’s mastery weaves what could be dry subject matter into the “movement and tension of an epic novel,” to quote the NY Times.

I must admire Chernow's resolve to research his subjects so thoroughly. This was my second go-around after Titan. These books have tremendous value as insight into the times and thoughts of the world's first Corporate Titans. However, both books, but this one in particular is tremendously difficult to read. I find myself labouring through each chapter, midway through and not enjoying the experience. I look back and have learned a great deal, but it was an incredible pain to get there.

This wasn’t my favorite of Ron Chernow’s books but it is well researched. There was more detail than I really wanted to know. I loved the other three books I read that he wrote—Hamilton, Washington, and Grant—I highly recommend those. If you want to know all about banking and JP Morgan then this book is worth reading.

a long book and a very interesting and helpful one from the aspect of understanding how world politics and events were shaped by the financial side - especially the influence of one dominant family - and a dominant person within that family.As all Chernow books, well researched and reasoned. My favorite of his: Titan - the John D. Rockefeller biography. Clearly he has a financial penchant.The book stops in the late 80's - so you can only wish for an updated view of the merger with Chase Bank and the role of the bank in the Great Recession and its current compliance problems. Ron, how about an update??

The book is fascinating and has aged well (written ±30 years ago!). The parts that cover the 19th century through about world war II are fascinating and unmissable. The latter parts towards the end of the book, seem to be written out of necessity because the book had to cover the whole history of the bank. I believe a later more experience Chernow would have had the wisdom to stop earlier and make a more compact book.As it stands, the good parts are great, for their context about how massively powerful Morgan was, and the beautiful historical anecdotes included.

Morgan himself was shockingly cash poor (much of his wealth was in art) compared to his fellow robber barons, but those robber barons relied on him for capital, the lifeblood of all businesses. The dominance of J.P. Morgan was only broken by Glass-Steagal (this was by no means certain: FDR liked the big banks because of their internationalist bent and his fear of the power conservative small bank presidents had in small town politics).As someone who worked in banking during a youth mispent, I loved the window Chernow provides into the banking of yesteryear. J.P. Morgan was a conservative place to work, even for a banking house. In the halcyon days of the three-martini lunch, J.P. Morgan partners abstained at lunch. It was considered a career-limiting move to remove your suit jacket before entering the restroom.The House of Morgan is the first book I would suggest to anyone interest in the history of American finance and one of a few I would suggest for economic history.As in all of his books, Chernow shows off an impressive vocabulary. He uses the words correctly and fruitfully, but you may benefit from keeping a dictionary handy.

I almost want to return this book, im Venezuelan and I didn't like any of the food on this book, it lacks creativity and like that X factor.

I liked this book a lot! My mom watches his segments on the morning variety show she's on and I liked his recipes, so I decided to buy my mom this book. I looked over it and, wow! Lots of good, easy, simple recipes. He splits it up into different sections too, so you can look at drinks, or main dishes, or appetizers! There are some words in there I had to look up in a dictionary as my Spanish is very general and he uses some regional names for a type of fish, for example, but it was easy to understand and the pictures are gorgeous. I would definitely recommend this cookbook as a gift or for yourself, if you want to try out some dishes with a latin twist!

Dislike. Too many paragraphs with history and less recipes.

I agree with one of the other reviewers, that this book is rather brief in its content, but if one takes it for he introduction book that it is, then one understands why there is little detailed info.The appendices are pretty robust though, and have some good tables with lots of hard-to-find info. There are appendices with formulas, scientific data, formula, conversionss, and there are tables with aircraft parameters and statisitics.The author is obviously a Brit and uses examples from Cranfield's past research as many examples used in the book.This book was required for Embry-Riddle's ASCI-603 Aircraft & Spacecraft Development.If you are serious about a book on aircraft design, and you really want to know what you'll need to know, or are serious about the field, save your money and get Dan Raymer's Aircraft Development: A Conceptual Approach (4th ed.). It's more expensive, but fatter than a Bible and practically a Bible in itself for the field of aircraft design.

An excellent book for introducing the basic concepts of aircraft design, but probably not meeting the level of detail for anything beyond sophomore undergraduate work. For anyone who has taken an advanced aerospace engineering design course, this book is lacking. The textbook shines when it goes into the details of a specific design project from history, but is overly general concerning most of the process. Already outdated in terms of GPS navigation systems and AutoCAD design processes.

Good into to aircraft design for those who are curious. I am not an aeronautical engineer or a pilot so I cant speak as to it's proffesional use but it was educational for my layman self.

I consider this book to be a rough draft for a much larger book to come (I hope). The author just skims lightly through vast numbers of subjects, so that anyone who knows anything about airplanes will learn nothing new. Yet it isn't written on a basic enough level to have much to offer someone who knows nothing.Disappointing.

I bought this book for a master's class. It takes a general overview of the process to design a new aircraft and the different systems that make up an airplane. The author also has several real world examples of aircraft during their development. It's a good read with lots of graphs and design pictures for a clearer explanation.

Was ok

Its use in an MAS course is too basic. I would recommend the book for undergrad courses only. This has been mentioned previously and continues to be of concern for students seeking greater detail. It leaves me wanting more detail, you will be hard pressed using this as a major source for writing detailed papers. OVERALL.... the book should cost about $40 bucks tops and should remain out of MAS courses. It carry's a value but basic to advanced learning.

It's a book that I needed for college. I didn't like the way it was written.
