I loved Fooled by Randomness and Black Swan and seriously disliked the Antifragility. I am very glad to say that with the Skin in the Game Taleb is back. Opinionated, at times rude and angry, but someone you feel you should listen to.When I buy books I usually read one star reviews. Some of them are crap (my book arrived with six missing pages!), but some give you a pretty good idea of what you are going to find. There is one star review that gets close to 5000 words limit, followed by the long thread of comments exchange where the replies by the original author get, again, to the said limit. If someone gets that fired up by the book that he regurgitates thousands of words - it's well worth a few bucks and I simply must read it.Anyway, as always with Taleb, I now have a new reading list based on his footnotes. Yes, he comes across as an angry man. Yes, he has irrational dislike of academics (as do I) and policy makers. Yes, some of his statements are contradictory and yes, sometimes he goes too far in his arguments. But this is exactly what makes books worthwhile the time spent reading them. Contradictions have to be sorted, but to do so you have to think about the subject and come to your own conclusions, and this involves effort, and this is what makes books stimulating.I highly recommend this book.

Skin in the Game is at the same time thought-provoking and original but also contradictory and sometimes absurd.Let’s start with the cons:1. I certainly won’t be the first to notice that Taleb can be mean-spirited. But why does he insist on presenting his views in this way? The communication of his ideas, often profound, does not require a mean-spirited or condescending tone. For however brilliant Taleb thinks he is, his skills in persuasion are severely lacking; he’s alienating a significant readership that may have otherwise been more receptive to his ideas. Not very far into the book we see Taleb take cheap shots at Steven Pinker, out of nowhere, discussing a topic that has nothing to do with any of Pinker’s actual ideas or positions. One wonders why Taleb cannot just present his ideas without the incessant personal attacks and condescension.2. His overall philosophy appears to be self-refuting. He reviles “intellectuals,” professors, and thinkers while praising “doers” and men of practice. He’s particularly distrustful of those who give advice for a living. Here’s Taleb:“Avoid taking advice from someone who gives advice for a living, unless there is a penalty for their advice.”So should we then ignore THIS advice? As far as I can tell, Skin in the Game is a work of philosophy, an intellectual exercise that argues against the value of intellectual exercise. This is the same self-refuting logic of relativism—in that the statement “everything is relative” is self-refuting because the statement itself needs to be absolute. If Taleb is wrong in any part of his philosophy it doesn’t appear that he would incur any penalty (no skin in the game). The upside for him is book sales with little to no downside risk, so by using his own logic we should conclude to not trust him. Also, to the extent that you believe ideas have power you might find yourself disagreeing with Taleb’s extreme position that no good ideas could possibly come from someone in an academic position (particularly from the reviled economists).Except that Taleb uses economic theories to frame his thinking. The Tragedy of the Commons, something Taleb discusses in his book, was developed by the economist William Forster Lloyd in his armchair. Even Taleb’s Black Swan concept is a reformulation of the Peso problem developed by...economists.I’m sure anyone can think up examples, rather easily, of useful ideas that were discovered by intellectuals or from university research.3. Taleb obsesses about the superiority of practice over academics and theory. This is a questionable proposition. As just one example, a recent study in the American Journal of Medicine concluded that “patients whose doctors had practiced for at least 20 years stayed longer in the hospital and were more likely to die compared to those whose doctors got their medical license in the past five years.”My own personal experience corroborates this, as a medical student was able to correctly diagnose what the attending physician had missed on a trip to the ER. Very experienced, practical individuals sometimes perpetuate bad habits and fail to keep informed of the theories and academics that lead to better practice. This point is completely lost on Taleb.4. Taleb’s definition of rationality as any action that promotes survival is patently false, as a simple thought experiment can show. Imagine a hypothetical survival machine is available for your use. By plugging yourself in, it will guarantee and maximize your life span and, on a social scale, maximizes reproduction. The price is that the machine also inflicts a high degree of pain and cuts you off from contact with other people.According to the logic of Taleb, the rational thing to do would be to plug into this machine. Of course, no one would volunteer to do this because survival is not what motivates rational behavior. Any rational agent would choose one year of pleasant life over 100 years in the survival machine, because actions have value according to how they promote or are perceived to promote well-being or pleasure.Taleb, using this more believable definition of rationality, could have used it to argue the same points, namely how religious belief cannot be called irrational if it promotes well-being, which includes psychological well-being and survival but not survival alone. The pros:That Taleb is antagonistic and holds some questionable views does not mean that he’s wrong about everything. When not being demeaning or taking extreme positions, Taleb writes about some of the most original, thought-provoking, and profound ideas. And even when you find yourself disagreeing with him, he makes you think. For this reason alone, the book is worth checking out.The idea that the extent of people’s stakes in particular outcomes is a critical yet underrated determinant of events is a profound idea with several implications, which Taleb skillfully explores throughout the book. And his idea that you should have to pay some kind of penalty for decisions that negatively impact others—risk sharing vs. risk transfer—is a solid framework for thinking about a host of issues. Of course, these ideas would be easier to swallow if presented with a little more humility, but I suppose we should know what to expect from Taleb by now.

If you hate BS, this is the book for you. Stop being "bullied" for what you think by academics and journalists who have no skin in the game. They have nothing to lose by being wrong (Think Viet Nam, Syrian, the 2008 economic melt down). Trust the do-ers who suffer the consequences for being wrong ( business people who take risks), This book has to be studied. It follows from Mr. Taleb's previous work which provides the science and mathematics behinds this work. It requires a "deep dive" and understanding. A casual book reviewer or journalist would not have an easy time reviewing this book. Be prepared to study, the results are very rewarding not matter what your field of interest.

Review

Do we fully understand the model of Christ's ministry? Are we letting His method be our method? Do we believe that He had some superpower that we do not have at our disposal? Are we walking as Jesus walked? All these questions—and many more—are well-addressed in the new book, 4 Chair Discipleship, by Dr. Dann Spader. I recommend the book for pastors, but even more eagerly suggest that church members engage this book with an open heart and a readiness to take a personal inventory of their walk with the Lord.Kent Evans, ChurchCentral.com

Of all the disciplers I know, my friend Dann Spader is at the top of the list. He disciples with his life, through his seminars and workshops, and now, thankfully, through this powerful book. Highly recommended!Joe Stowell, president, Cornerstone University  Few people have the reputation of Dann Spader—with a life's passion for making disciples. Now in 4 Chair Discipling, Dann challenges us to walk more faithfully in Jesus' calling. Read and dwell on this helpful book.Ed Stetzer, president, Lifeway Research Dann Spader’s giftedness and knowledge have been a huge help to Southeast Christian Church. His 4 Chair Discipling can be an enormous benefit to your church as well. Learn to make disciples who make disciples by studying how Jesus modeled it for all of us. It’s a journey you’ll want to take!Dave Stone, senior pastor, Southeast Christian ChurchDann Spader and Sonlife played a part in our journey here at Real Life to discover a reproducible discipleship model that would work in a church. Dann has been committed to doing discipleship Jesus' way and he has inspired many to follow suit. For those who have listened it has been life and ministry changing. He is one of the voices that should be heard in a church culture badly in need of Jesus and His methods for discipleship. I encourage you to read what he has to write.Jim Putman, senior pastor, Real Life MinistriesWho could deny that the responsibility to make disciples would be at the top of the list of what Jesus wants/commands his people to do? Yet, who would deny that most of us don’t know quite what that is or how to do it?  Dann Spader’s 4 Chair Discipling blends rich biblical instruction and insight along with skilled and fruitful experience to help Christians understand and embrace the callto make disciples. Matthew 28:19 forms one of the cardinal commands of the Christian life and is so frequently repeated that we easily forget its significance. Personally, discipleship forms the basis of our philosophy of ministry and I am convinced that it is the most critical element lacking in our churches today. Author Dann Spader sees the need to. Therefore, in the Like Jesus Series, he shares his views in the book 4 Chair Discipling. The title says it all. Spader outlines a disciple-making process which he sees as defined by four chairs: 1) Seeker (those seeking Christ), 2) Believers (those who have actively trusted Christ as Savior), 3) Workers (those working for Christ), and 4) Trained and Reproducing (those disciples who are making disciples also). Important to note is that the author makes a key distinction between discipleship and disciple-making. The focus of this book is not merely discipleship, but disciple-making, that is the whole process a person makes from unbeliever to eventually making disciples themselves. In order to establish the principles, Spader formulates the book by first addressing some foundational principles and an overview (chapters 1-4) before spending a chapter on each of the chairs. The final three chapters address potential barriers and problems that may arise.Dann Spader’s look upon the need for discipleship and emphasis on seeing Christians reproducing themselves is not only pleasing but biblical. Following Christ’s life, the author expounds upon the process of disciple-making. In his explanation, he does two important things. First, he lays a foundation so that readers understand the need. Second, he writes in a practical way with insightful principles for Christians to adopt in the disciple-making process. It is important to appreciate his ability to offer unique steps.Unfortunately, the most difficult aspect is nothing minor. The author seems to take a very low view of Christ. He spends much of the book emphasizing Jesus’ humanity, even spending an entire chapter on the Kenosis theory in order to explain how Christ became human. Jesus’ humanity is not only necessary for the gospel to be true but needs to be remembered by. Christians. However, Spader focuses so much on Christ’s humanity that he diminishes Christ’s deity. His point is well-taken when he notes that many do not want to engage in disciple-making because they assume they are incapable of duplicating Christ’s work because he was God. He is correct in that this is a mere excuse, but instead of noting that God still works through humans, he simply appeals to human ability. He even reiterates several times that we can do greater things than Christ did. The result is that while his initial concerns are valid, his refutation of it goes too far.4 Chair Discipline was a difficult book to review. The author raises some valid concerns and even orients readers towards a right goal (making disciples who make disciples). However, his overemphasis on man’s ability and Christ’s humanity raise some major concerns. His focus to take away from Christ’s deity takes away from Christ’s glory. The result is the inability to recommend the book.Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from the publisher at no cost to me for the purposes of review. However, my review was not influenced by the author, publisher, or anyone else associated with this book and is the result of my own reading of it

When Jesus came into this world, He called on His believers to share in His life, passion, and calling to participate in the Great Commission to make disciples. Dedicated to explaining this process through years of study, author Dr. Dann Spader, in his book.” 4 Chair Disciplining: What Jesus Calls Us to Do”, emphasizes Jesus’s disciple-making strategy that follows four challenges, represented by four chairs that He posed to His followers. Throughout the book, I was impressed by the amount of learning I was able to glean concerning this strategy. Although one can learn a lot, the book isn’t too technical and will be easy to understand. What I liked most about the book is that it showed me a simplistic pattern towards discipleship that one can easily miss and overlook; something I never contemplated. It strongly brings to importance, the need to look to the application of scripture, bringing it to life for the individual. The book shows you how to accomplish this. Being only 150 pages in length, it isn’t a long read and will keep your attention throughout. Each chapter concludes with questions for the reader to ponder towards a better understanding of the material. If you long to understand where to begin and to become better equipped at discipling others, this book is for you. After reading it, you’ll be eager to share its strategies with other believers. I highly recommend that you take the time in getting this book. You’ll be glad you did!“I received a copy of this book from the publisher for the purpose of this review.”

If you are working toward developing a full-throated discipleship structure in your ministry there are many books that are worth reading, and this one by Dann Spader is among them. He lays out a discipleship structure that is based on a solid biblical framework. This book outlines a simple framework for discipleship that can be adapted to meet the needs of most any church or ministry and bring some clarity to the discipleship process. The 4 chairs described by the author will give you clear ideas on how to deal with different people at different stages of the disciple making process. Great book. Worth the read.

This is a fairly comprehensive rundown of herbal/natural remedies. I'm super into that stuff, to the point where I don't use anything that isn't totally natural (i.e. no pills, no chemicals, no matter what), so I've heard of a lot of the stuff Heinerman lists, but there's also a lot of remedies that I hadn't heard of before. It's organized alphabetically but the herb, and then there's an index in the back of ailments, and, personally, I would've done it the other way (more likely that I'll be looking for a variety of cures to my one problem that a variety of things to do with the one herb/fruit/whatever that I have), but it's effective this way.The book is pretty and well bound, and even though if you looked hard enough I'm sure you could find all this info online, it's nice to have everything in one place, so you can browse as well as look things up.Also, this would be so great in the end of the world, a la TNT's Falling Skies or AMC's Walking Dead...I have no discernible fighting or building skills, so my only hope to be kept around is having healing skills, so I'm adding this book to my list of end of the world supplies.

I've had this book since it first came out 20 years ago, and, although there are many good references out there, this is the first book I turn to when I need this kind of information, and it hasn't failed me yet. I've even tried some of the many recipes he includes, and they're good! I really think every home should have a copy of it. In fact, I just bought a copy for my sister for $.01 plus shipping from Amazon Marketplace. I paid a lot more, but I don't regret it. It has definitely been worth it.

The Step by Step series is colorful, straightforward and friendly. I'll admit, I've had fits with FrontPage 98. I've just never caught on. But, hearing good things about the 2002 edition, I upgraded. Know that the book that comes with the software from Micorsoft is *brief* so I knew I needed more help. I checked out a couple of other FP books but was suspect that their too-technical, no-illustrations content was not what I needed to get up and running. The SbS series is a good hand-holder and gave me the bigger picture perspective. I got my site up and am pleased. I did buy one more book for the more technical issues but I credit this pub for getting me going. As I upgrade to the XP versions, I will continue buying the Step by Step series.

Microsoft FrontPage has not been produced since version 2003 and if you need to edit an existing web page that was created in FrontPage this book may help you do that. Creating new web pages in FrontPage is not recommended at this time. My copy came with the instructional CD in an unopened envelope at the back of the book.

You follow along by rote like a robot with little or no explanation or understanding of what you are doing, and more important why. Many of the exercises assume you know what to do or leave much to speculate as to what steps to take (this is supposed to be a step by step) and often do not come out as shown or described which is extremely frustrating. If you need, as you will, to contact their e-mail address for support or a question, forget it. You don't want to wake them up.What you get is typical of MS's arrogance and couldn't care less.If you really want to learn FrontPage 2002, there are much better sources.Louis

This is an excellent book if you are starting to learn how to design Web pages. Make sure you follow each step. It is an excellent step by step book, which also shows pictures to make sure you are in the right dialog box, etc.

I just substituted my own files for the ones named in the book and had my web page up and running in just a few days. I liked the picutures of what to push on the screen. And I'm only up to the third chapter.

In the world of web design it is very important to make sure that you use a application that will enhance the overall outlook of the web page, my personal choice is FrontPage and along with that comes the idea of learning the application. This book is my choice for that job.In just over 325 pages I found a wealth of information that not only shows me how to use the program but also prepares me for the MOUS exam for Front Page 2002. The easy to follow along guidelines make learning a breeze and for those who can't afford formal classroom training this may be the answer.Within the 12 chapters you'll cover topics like creating the web site, lists, tables, graphics, building a web site from the ground up, web layouts and links. Also there is coverage of auto updating the web site, working with databases, management and publishing of the web site.Use of color photos enhanced the learning process because you can see the actual finished product before you get started. Along with tips and tricks the step by step instructions make building and creating web pages very easy.Built for the beginner this book is an excellent tool for web designer in all of us. The author has also included HTML coding examples to show the underlying world of web design. Overall this book is well worth the price.

If you're brand new to FrontPage, this is a decent place to begin the learning process. It's a lot cheaper than taking a $500 class, and more material is covered. I would say this is a good book for programmers who are just beginning to learn about web programming. But if you don't even know what HTML is, then go do some research, ask some friends, then come back and get this book if you're still interested. No matter what Microsoft says, computers are complicated and hard to learn for Joe Average. Microsoft has made web design about about as easy as possible with FrontPage, and this book is good at getting you started. Once you finish this book, you'll need to get one that digs deeper into the subject. I recommend FrontPage Developer's Guide by Mike Jennett. If, on the other hand, you want to become an expert, a genuine web guru, you should probably learn a tool other than FrontPage, such as Dreamweaver. Then again, REAL programmers don't need computer languages or development tools; they just use ones and zeroes! ;-)Good luck to you!

I agree with the reviewer who found this book confusing because there are errors in the instructions.Trying to use this book was extremely frustrating, and I finally gave up trying. Possibly Microsoft had the writers put it together using a beta version and then never had anyone edit it after the retail version was released. From now on, I'm going to try books first in the library before buying them. Interestingly, Step by Step for Excel 2000 is a good book.Best luck to everyone in learningFrontPage 2002,C. Smart

Finally, A book that takes you through the finishing process of the drawing of a face and how to practice the parts of the human head and facial features. It really helped take me to the next level with a walk through. that was quite basic but no one writes about because they think we had the training or just know the material. I am glad the writer artists covered it. I never had this explained and demonstrated before. So if you last long enough to keep seeking answers and are patient enough; you get fortunate and find a book like this one. Maybe the people that are fortunate enough to be professionally trained for get what its like to get to be trained at a school or don't know whats needed, but these folks did. ANS

It is serving as a really good reference book. I particularly like the detail to measuring and proportions when doing portraits. Also color formulas are extremely helpful for skin tones.

I have to say after reading all the great reviews to this book- I'm quite disappointed with it. Yes- I like that it covers different mediums and gives a guide but it's vague and should have more descriptive techniques on each medium. I particularly did not like that the oil and acrylic mediums were meshed into one section, rather than separating them. They're very different paints w very different results and techniques. I've been drawing and painting for my entire life- since I could pick up a pencil- I'm 35 now and have had extensive knowledge on many facets of art- I had ordered this to check out newer techniques that now exist and it's pretty much as any Portrait book that already exists. It arrived quickly and is easy to follow, my reason for 3 stars. Imo- it doesn't deliver the necessary knowledge needed- it's too broad and should have more intensive detail. Xx

Found more of what I was looking for on Youtube or Pinterest than what was written in here. Had a specific project I was working on and it didn't address those needs.

Just getting into trying Portraits.....great step by step instruction....Good referenceInstructions clear and simple

There was not as much step by step for oil painting which is what I was looking for but it has some good tips on drawing

I wasn't impressed with this one. There was nothing that stood out in the pages of instruction.

Too technical for what I was looking for

This is nowhere near the complete Dead Sea scrolls, and I'm not referring to the portions that are absent due to the original text being damaged and unreadable, I'm talking about entire sections that exist in English but for some reason are not included in this "complete" collection. Firstly, it only contains the non-biblical Dead Sea scrolls but even those suffer a painful abridgement. For example, the Genesis Apocryphon does not include any text from columns 3, 4, 5, 8, 9 or 10 (and go figure I was specifically needing column 5). The introduction even admits that they exist and have even been translated and is kind enough to provide information on where to look if you wish to read them. Kind, yes, but insulting given the book's title and $22 price mark.If this were called "Abridged Portions of Selected Dead Sea Scrolls in English" I would respect it as that would be a wonderfully accurate title, but we all know that it would not sell nearly as well as it has if it had been labeled honestly. This blatant marketing deception fueled by greed is probably to be placed upon Penguin Classics and not the late Geza Vermes, who is an exceptional biblical scholar.

I thought if I got the original 1998 translation it would be "complete". It is not.The first book of Enoch has been reduced to a single nonsensical paragraph. The second book of Enoch is completely missing. The book of Giants is also reduced to a single nonsensical paragraph. The book of Jubilees is also reduced to a few nonsensical paragraphs. These are the very first things I noticed missing. I was kind of shocked that with a book called "complete dead sea scrolls" so much would be missing. The Table of Contents is very misleading. Some of the names attributed to particular scrolls are uniquely the author's and not named elsewhere by anyone because they are too incomplete to mean anything.Get the Florentino Garcia Martinez Dead Sea Scrolls. It is the most complete copy out there.

I'm taking an upper level history course on Dead Sea Scrolls, and this is one of my two texts for the class. I'm very impressed with the accuracy of translation and the writing competency of the author. It is clearly written and documents all of the non-Biblical writings found in the Dead Sea sea scrolls. When I first got the book, I was disappointed that the books of the Bible and Torah had been omitted from the work, but I soon learned in class that these were readily available in (drumroll, please) the Bible and the Torah. The significance of the scrolls is that they confirm the accuracy of the already-known but younger copies of these much-read and loved works. Although the scrolls are over a thousand years older than any of the previously known extant writings, they are almost identical to the newer copies! The scrolls included in this book are peshars, midrashes and targums (commentaries on Biblical books such as Nahum and Habakkuk); a Community Rule for the sect which apparently lived at Qumran, a settlement near the caves where the scrolls were found; eschatological writings regarding the end of times (such as the War Scroll); and directives to the Leader of the sect which presided over the congregation. Very, very interesting window on sectarian life. The only complaint I have--and it's probably one born of ignorance--is that it is somewhat difficult to find specific documents by using the indices at the end of the book. I'm never sure I've completed a reading assignment because of the cluttered way that the manuscripts are referenced. But when I consider how many thousands of fragments were organized and of how many copies of the same text were found in 11 different caves, it's no wonder the index is so complex. Some people use this book to study only ONE of the copies of a document. So all of the works must be referenced and cross-referenced in the index--not just the best preserved of the bunch.Likewise, in reading the translations of the manuscripts, the brackets and parentheses, used in the middle of words and sentences to distinguish between texts from different caves, are rather distracting because they aren't utilized in the manner that I'm accustomed to in reading and writing. It takes a little getting used to. But it is a very effective means for the writer to pull together a fragment of a document from one cave to fill in missing text from another copy of the same document found in another cave.I don't know if any of that even makes sense. This is a book which really needs a companion text, such as James VanderKam's The Dead Sea Scrolls Today. Unless you already know the history of the sect and how the scrolls were discovered, the manuscripts alone are fairly meaningless to the modern reader. It was a daunting task, assembling the fragments of the scrolls and cataloging all of the documents found in those caves. To organize all of that information into one cohesive anthology and then translate it from Aramaic, Hebrew and Greek into English and other languages is nothing short of heroic. Vermes is a brilliant man indeed.

The title of this book is a blatant lie. It is not complete. It is not even close to complete. It is priced cheaply and is quite worthwhile, but do not expect to receive this and get the complete Dead Sea Scrolls. No Biblical scrolls are included. None. That is an entirely different volume from a different publisher. While the line of Penguin Classics is overall a superb way to make world literature accessible to a wide audience, dis-naming this book is entirely unacceptable.

I would have given it a five except for the fact that it was missing a couple of manuscript fragments which possibly were discovered after its publication but I doubt it. The most obvious and important item missing being Isaiah scroll, a major find complete in its entirety .Otherwise it is an excellent translation and very needed..

What Do Jews Believe?: The Spiritual Foundations of Judaism

Amazon.com Review

What Do Jews Believe?: The Spiritual Foundations of Judaism, by David Ariel, is a basic exploration of the broad question posed by its title. Ariel's contention is that "Judaism is not a religion of fixed doctrines or dogmas but a complex system of evolving beliefs." And yet despite its diversity, "no matter how literally or metaphorically we choose to interpret them, ... sacred myths form the framework for the Jew's ongoing search for personal meaning in his or her own life, the life of the Jewish community, and society at large." What Do Jews Believe? describes some essential "sacred myths," such as the existence and nature of God, the meaning of the Torah, the importance of prayer, and the significance of chosenness. Ariel's selection and exploration of these myths is guided by the following questions: Which Jewish beliefs have survived from antiquity to the present day, how have they evolved over time, and what beliefs distinguish Judaism today? As he pursues these questions, Ariel enthusiastically describes Judaism's seminal influence on the rise of humanism, which makes his book especially credible for readers whose sympathies are more secular than his own. Perhaps the best part of this book is its conclusion, a tzavaah, or ethical will, written as an open letter to his children. In it, he quotes a letter from a mother to her child, written while they were living in the Warsaw Ghetto in 1940, before they both were murdered by the Nazis. This letter offers an extraordinarily persuasive and poignant summary of what exactly makes a Jew a Jew: "Judaism, my child, is the struggle to bring down God upon earth, a struggle for the sanctification of the human heart. This struggle your people wages not with physical force but with spirit and by constant striving for truth and justice. So, do you understand, my child, how we are distinct from others and wherein lies the secret of our existence on earth?" To these words, Ariel adds a moving piece of advice to his own children, and to his readers: "Remember, your life is like a book. Write in it what you want to be known about you." --Michael Joseph Gross

I really enjoyed reading this book. As a Christian, I feel that what I believe began with what the Jews believed and I love learning as much about God, "bless His name", as I can. (I learned from this book to bless God's name whenever used.) It was a little difficult to keep track of the Hebrew and Yiddish names and words used, but there is a brief list of some of the more common terms used in the back of the book. The author used a nice format for describing each section that I caught onto after about the third time he started a new topic. He would start with the oldest concepts and discuss as these evolved over time during different developmental times of Jewish thought. I'm not sure I can remember them all, but it was something like this, age of the Talmud (as it was written by Moses), times of the Priests (while the 1st and 2nd Temple existed), then when the 2nd temple was destroyed and no more sacrifices could be made Jewish thought was regulated by the Rabbis and the most popular of them established large and influential schools to study the Talmud and interpret it to the people, often coming up with new thought and conflicting opinion. The Middle Ages brought a time of acceptance of some of the concepts of the Arab schools, Greek Philosophy, and even some Christian thinking on God. Then the period of "Modern" (1800's) thought is covered as scholars started to use a more scientific process to study word structure, archeology, and critical thought to try to determine Biblical (Talmudic) accuracy. Then finally, a description of current thinking from the different Jewish groups Orthodox, Reformed, Ameican, etc. Also, included are discussions of the school of mystic Jewish thought, Kaballa, which arose in Spain and was influential in several periods.Of course, being Jewish, the author says Christians are confused and there were many false Messiahs including Jesus. He implies he can't believe that anyone would believe for 2000 years Jesus was the Messiah since none of the expectations of what the Messiah would do were accomplished by Jesus. (They expected the Messiah to be a mortal man and military ruler who will defeat the enemies of the Jews and rebuild King David's Kingdom on Earth.) And that the followers of Jesus purposely searched the Talmud to find and distort prophetic passages to use as "proof" of Jesus being the Messiah. So, as I understand this book to say, Jewish thought is an evolving understanding of man's relationship to his creator. It changes and grows over time and can be influenced by changing human conditions like the horror of the Holocaust, and influenced by other things like scientific and archeological discoveries, etc. The Jew is responsible to God, bless His name, for following the instructions set down in the Talmud and interpreted by the Rabbis. His salvation is based on following these regulations, and that most of them have an aspect of doing "good deeds" for others including family, friends, the poor, the widow, orphans, and others who are less fortunate. Prayer is part of the regulations and helps to include the Jew in developing a sense of belonging to the community of worshippers. There is lots more great information in this book and I recommend you read it for yourself.

Not only is the book well written it seems to cover what Jews believe and does it without being negative toward any other religion. It is well done and complete.

Well written
