I was skeptical, but this guide turned out to be SUPER useful. The restaurant recommendations were great, the neighborhood maps were detailed and precise, and it helped me find some lovely gems (like a fabulous bookstore in Ipanema) that I would have missed otherwise. I carried it with me (surreptitiously) every day in Rio.

Rio de Janeiro is my only destination. I went to the library and took out every book on Rio and Brazil. I compared them all for my tourist needs and this one was the best. It even had the carnival schedule.

Helped me immensely in my stay in the marvelous city.

Was able to plan my week in Rio based on this travel guide and everything worked as described. Good job!

Solid guide. Came in handy when I needed some guidance and inspiration as to what to explore next. TripAdvisor is still my go-to though.

So insightful I used it everyday in Brasil!

Excellent purchase!

Perfect guide and recently published so the information was up to date.

#19,800 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I was looking for to a nice long read as I started this book. The first story was not bad, if you could get past the myriad of typos and word misuse. Also the vocabulary was barely on a middle school level. (Graphic subject matter not included). Then I started the second story. Hmmm three to one, that's a little different. But that's about all that was. The Sex scenes were basically the same, with one additional player. Some of the descriptions were almost word for word. And how weird is it for a character speaking in the first person to use phrases like "my big blue eyes" of "my firm, plump breasts with their hard nipples"? By the time I got to the third story I was just skipping thru looking for unique plot or story lines and went right past the Sex reruns. I guess, if you don't mind poor editing, and you want a brain vacation, reading anyone of these stories would be a great idea. I just wouldn't recommend reading them all at once. And if you want to read more then one, read the third story first, then the first story, since it's chronically the next set of events.

Bossed Three Times -I LOVED this book!! Arianna can't help fantasizing about Hunter, Sean and Damian fr.om the first time they met, And they can't stop thinking of her. What follows is mind blowing. If you love steamy menages. then this book is for you. If you aren't a fan of dirty talk and explicit sex, then don't read this. .Twice Driven -What a steamy menage!! Abby is on the run when she meets Jackson and Connor. From the start they are determined to make her theirs and protect herTwice Bossed -Madison Faye does it again with another hot menage!! Jordan and Luke have been burned before, but Sasha is different. Now if her sleazy ex would just go away, everyone would be safe and happy.Twice Tackled -My favorite of the Twice series, which is saying something!! I LOVE Tucker, Kerri and Russ and how the football Gods fell for the nerdy science girl.!! Also, how they Russ and Tucker took charge, but didn't have to do the Dom/Sub crap that the other two books did. Sorry, but the women having to call the men "Sir" gets old... Can you tell I'm not submissive, lol??

Frankly if I could give this story X's instead of stars I would. A true "bubble-gum" non-sense, unbelievable book. Highly unbelievable plot, and I honestly don't know many women who truly feel the way the female lead claims to, however.... who really shares their deepest, darkest desires out loud? Aside from all of that noise, reasonably well written, a few typo's. Don't plan on buying this writers work again, but also don't necessarily feel the money was wasted, always willing to spend $ to try out new writers.

This could have been better. The heroine responses to her friend’s trouble and the unrealistic idea that she be allowed to join in fireworks is too unrealistic but to compound it she isn’t injured, confronted, and even participates with no familiarity is purely outlandish that it jolted me away from my emergence in the tale. The erotica was consistent with the theme. The steam is scorching. I would have liked to be better able to distinguish the characters though.

These men are intense, erotic, sexy, protective and succulently delicious! We see what happens when you disregard what you think you "should" do and act on what you desire To Do. These men are 3X more of what you want in a mate. They give more than they take and I love that. They take excellent care of their girl meeting her wants needs and desires. They fulfill each and every fantasy she has ever had and give her some that she didn't even know were possible. If you want a great story with a HEA that is just perfect and want a story that can melt your panties and your Kindle, then this is your book.I also highly recommend Taken Three Times by the same author. I accidentally read it first. It too doesn't disappoint, though I wrote a review for it as well. Enjoy, I did.

I want bosses like these guys. Hunter, Damien, Sean needed a "personal assistant", Arianna needed a job. But after a skype interview gone wrong or right depending on your point of view Arianna got more than she bargained for or just what she wanted, again depending on your point of view. This is a fun read and Sexy as the day is long. Who wouldn't love 3 hot sexy domineering alpha males wanting everything you have to offer and things you didn't know you had to offer?

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.I've enjoyed Ms. Faye's books immensely. This extension of her "Twice" series, by incorporating an additional alpha male is absolutely engaging. Break out the ice water, because it is just that steamy, that I had to purchase the book too! I loved how the story developed, and also how absolutely alpha the three leading men are. Go on, you know you want to read it, I want a Sean, Hunter, and Damian for myself!

More of a 3.5. The love scenes were HOT. But I felt that everything was rushed, to fast for my personal liking. That's all. Especially since the men new what they wanted because during the initial interview they kept asking if Arianna knew everything about taking this position involved. Which in my mind meant more than just secretarial duties would be included. Arianna had no clue. But still this was an interesting read nonetheless.ThanksOh and PS I'll try to read the Twice series soon.

Looking back on the last 50 years of my life, one of best things that ever happened to me was my wife's uncle telling me to buy and read this book. That was a year before I shipped out for Vietnam.A few years after I returned, I remembered his words when we found out he had passed and I bought the book. We had two kids, paycheck to paycheck, and no savings. I read the book and it hit home; hard. Slowly, week-by-week, we started to build savings. Now, we have a good retirement, well off and secure. This book started it off.Easy to read and understand, timeless message. This book should be required reading for all school kids. It doesn't espouse greed like Think and Grow Rich. It simply teaches that you already have the ability to grow your prosperity from what you already have.READ THIS BOOK and change your life forever.

I buy this book by the case and give it to all the young people (14-25) in my neighborhood. It's an easy read and gives seven basic principles on saving and investing money. I was raised on the 10% rule and have passed it on to the next generation. It is written in parable form, so it's interesting as well as instructive. I highly recommend this book of wisdom for the youth in anyone's life.

I've read this book many times and I try to read it every year so as to refresh my memory and ensure my path. When I first read this, it was an amazing epiphany and I immediately took action. I was broke, about to lose my house, and looking for a way out of the hole I'd dug myself into. The rules within this book works well! I live in Hawaii now, in a nice suburban house, without worry of money. I am always surprised when I'm handed my next paycheck because I no longer count the days to each. Many thanks to the writer, the translator, the archeologist, and of course, the Babylonians!

I read this book years ago. As a result I listened to one piece of advice and now will have a comfortable retirement.Because I was a Christian I believed that I should tithe 10% of my income. I was tithing on my net income, not my gross. In my heart I knew that I should be tithing on my gross iincome. After reading this book, I decided that I should tithe on my gross, but in addition I should tithe (10%) to myself as well. That retirement is what got me through the crash in 2008 and has allowed me to purchase a small retirement property.

Just thought I should write this review as a warning to others. The Richest Man in Babylon is one of my favorite books. It's a great "back to the basics" look at finances. When I'm off with my finances, I dig out my copy of this book. I thought about doing a study group with some members of my church. So, I wanted to check this one out because the "Now Revised and Updated for the 21st Century" part of the title led me to believe that it would be a more modern version maybe removing the thee's and thou's... kinda like an NIV vs KJV of the Bible. I WAS MISTAKEN!!!It's both taller and wider than my current beat up version but the font they used is soooo small that I couldn't bring myself to make a detailed comparison- unlike the cover and back cover which are huge in comparison. They jammed 160 pages into 88 POORLY!!! I've never sent a book back before, but this one must go back!!!So get the book, but not this version!!!

First off, this was probably the 20th book about (finance, getting rich, making $, etc) I read. For my adult life I struggled with $, debt, bills, etc. While the info contained within this book certainly is no secret, the story spoke to me in a way that nothing else had. Maybe it was the context, language, or the historical time tested theory, I'm not sure but whatever it was, it resonated.I started reading this book a few years ago in a hotel room on Christmas eve.Something about the stories, lessons, and history really spoke to me. I made a commitment and the following year saw me get out of the hamster wheel of debt that I'd been running in since I was 18.... And establish a respectable savings. Some won't appreciate the stories, some may dismiss the lessons as "common sense" (despite the fact that they aren't applying them and are broke.)Other stories, lessons, formats, may speak better to you.... That's fine. But for me,This book along with the millionaire mind are head and shoulders the two books that have made the biggest impact on me.

3 stars does not mean it is a bad book. Definitely worth a read, especially if you are interested in personal finance without the droll of a finance textbook. Three stars means that the beginning of the book was far stronger than the end, and after halfway the information started repeating a bit and the anecdotes were not as compelling as the beginning ones. However, this book was definitely unique and a quick read with lots of good information that still holds truth now.

This book should be on the summer reading list for every school. I read this when I was younger, and again recently. I read it to my 8 year old daughter. Sometimes a narrative like this is what people need to really understand things. For example, I could say "use money to acquire assets that will make more money, not liabilities or things that just depreciate." But that's just one sentence, and we might all soon forget it. When you take a set of concepts and put it into a story, it gives people a scaffold to hang their understanding on. That's what this book is. It's been around forever, and it is still highly recommended, and there is a good reason for that.As for this edition, I found it to be fine. I wanted the original text, and this met the criteria.

Residents of the Lower 48 sometimes imagine Alaska as a snow-covered land of igloos, oil pipelines, and polar bears. But Alaska is far more complex geographically, culturally, ecologically, and politically than most Americans know, and few writers are as capable of capturing this complexity as John McPhee. In Coming into the Country, McPhee describes his travels through much of the state with bush pilots, prospectors, and settlers, as well as politicians and businesspeople who have their eyes set on a very different future for the state.

Classic John McPhee, never was particularly interested in Alaska but after reading Annals of a Former World, I knew anything by the author was intriguing. And I was right. He has an amazing talent of viewing all facets of a tale and equally representing them. He occasionally inserts his own thoughts but not in the modern manner of instructing the reader in what to think, but rather how one's view can change as horizons broaden. McPhee truly has a razor wit and will reference anecdotes from chapters before in desert dry one liners. Some may find the author verbose yet I feel if you approach his work as a savory delight rather than a quick snack, you will discover an amazing breadth of description that satisfies the imagination and truly brings another world to life.

Astonishingly detailed account of life in the nether regions of Alaska. The people and their lives on the periphery of settlements and of survival. I can't say that the author is melodic or wry or engaging ... more like someone who has been to the edge of endurance and is recounting how he got through day after day. In other words it borders on tedious , but it is a fascinating tedium and well worth the read.

Not about tectonics as I thought. My mistake. Detailed living in the wilderness so that I know I would NEVER want to do it. Wonderful enthralling read. Need a map with it. Book in great condition, and for once I didn't have to keep my dictionary next to me as I do with most McPhee. Fascinating writer.

First and third sections good, with some deeply affecting scenes and characters. The middle part about Alaskan politics is less interesting and poorly focused. Would be great to have a new edition, now that the North Slope, NPR and ANWR are under assault.

Interesting interviews with Alaskans who have moved north and settled in a small remote city called Eagle. I have always thought Alaska was for those who can't get along in the lower 48. John McPhee confirms that notion with his travels and descriptions of some really weird people in Alaska. Not really what I had expected, but good. I like the book Alaska by Mitchner much more since it was a broader more general picture of the settlement of Alaska.

McPhee presents many sides of the now fading American frontier in Alaska. I found the section about the tugs of war between cities for the honor of being the Capital too long, and I found myself skimming big sections. The second half tells the stories of many Alaskan characters in the remote town of Eagle, and the details of these lives paint a fascinating mural of life in the Northern wilds.

The only reason this book doesn't rate five stars is because the middle section, "What They Were Hunting For" (about the search for a new state capital) is a bit dated and can't really measure up to the rest of the book. But the first section, "The Encircled River" is an amazing piece of prose. This book was written 30 years ago, and when I re-read "The Encircled River", I feel like I've been given the gift of seeing with my own eyes, what was then one of the last untouched wildernesses in the world. The final section, "Coming into the Country", is absolutely fascinating, a story of people who have sought out and continue to search for a life that few Americans could even begin to imagine.McPhee is one of the great writers of our time. He can take topics that I might otherwise find dull, and transform them into page-turners. When given the subject of Alaska, he does better than that.

John McPhee is the greatest outdoor writer since Hemingway! This book is the real story of Alaska and her people, country, adventure, and written with McPhee's style, feelings and personal experience. You want to read it because of the great writing and the story. If you have a friend going on an Alaska trip-give them the book!

The Quest for Z: The True Story of Explorer Percy Fawcett and a Lost City in the Amazon, by Greg Pizzoli

From School Library Journal

Gr 2–5—Percy Fawcett dreamed of being an explorer from the time he was a young child in the 1860s; the accounts of his explorer father and brother fueled his enthusiasm. Even his stint in the British Army in Sri Lanka afforded him the opportunity to investigate local jungles. On Fawcett's return home, he began training through the Royal Geographical Society, learning, for instance, which plants were poisonous and which were not. The Society hired him to map areas of Bolivia, Brazil, and Peru, including some of the most dangerous regions of the Amazon rain forest. Fawcett kept coming home safe and finding a new trip to lead. Throughout, he heard rumors of a fantastic ancient city reportedly deep in the Amazon area, a ruin he wanted to locate. So off he went in April 1925, with his 21-year-old son and another young man. Fawcett sold his story to a newspaper and promised regular reports so the papers could bring "live" news to their readers. This offering is for daring readers who prefer nonfiction: there's an unknown explorer to pique their interest, great back matter to demonstrate how to deepen their research, and Pizzoli's clever, humorous illustrations. However, this is very much a tale of British colonialism and will likely need to be supplemented with further discussions. VERDICT A swashbuckling adventure for large elementary school and nonfiction collections.—Dorcas Hand, formerly at Annunciation Orthodox School, Houston

Greg Pizzoli's lucid text, compelling light-hearted illustrations and serendipitous sidebars make this book hard to put down--even for adult readers. A tour de force for its projected readership, which should find it even more an adventure than his earlier masterful "Tricky Vic" which charmed our grandchildren, now 9 and 14 years old.

The author of Tricky Vic returns with another rip-roaring nonfiction picture book. It is the true story of Percy Fawcett, a British explorer who searched for an ancient city hidden in the Amazon rainforest. Fawcett had dreamed his entire life of being an explorer and as an adult took many treks into South America to map the region. They faced many dangers, such as huge snakes and natives with weapons. Many of the men he traveled with perished on the adventures but Fawcett survived. Others thought that the Amazon city was a myth while Fawcett insisted that it existed. If he found it, it would make him one of the most famous explorers of all time and one of the wealthiest too. This book tells his tale as he searched for the lost city.Pizzoli has a knack for selecting real life stories that most people, adults and children, will not have heard of. This one is a fascinating story of belief and bravery, about a man who left family and country behind in his quest to discover the unknown. Pizzoli tells the story with lots of action and a sense of adventure in his prose. There are moments where Pizzoli allows the action to slow, the wonder of the moment to grow, and the dangers to almost overwhelm. It’s written with skill and knowledge, building to a conclusion that suits the life of Fawcett to a Z.The book design and illustrations add so much to this nonfiction read. Done in a simple and clever style, just like Pizzoli’s picture books, the images add necessary humor to the book. The design of the book also allows additional information to be added on sidebars. Pizzoli uses his illustrations to also create moments of tension and drama, pausing the action for effect.Smart, stylish and successful, this nonfiction picture book will take readers on quite an adventure. Appropriate for ages 5-9.

A picture book biography of Percy Fawcett, a turn of the century British explorer who mapped many areas of the Amazon and disappeared into the jungle in a quest to find proof of an ancient major civilization in the Amazon which he referred to as Z.I've read the adult book on Fawcett by Grann The Lost City of Z and based on that, Pizzoli has done a great job of summarizing Fawcett's life and accomplishments for kids. He also manages to convey the dangers of jungle exploration without traumatizing readers. The illustration style helps with that, it's almost like illustration with icons or emoji-like. It's not super detailed but is attractive. A nice picture book biography for the more adventurous reader or those who like unsolved mysteries.Notes on content: A death is mentioned by arrows, but it is illustrated as a human outline with arrows resting on it and isn't gory. Dangers are mentioned, but they are illustrated apart from humans. Other explorers who disappeared are mentioned, no gory deaths described.

Pizzoli's biography of Fawcett starts on page 5 with a legend of an ancient city in Brazil that had been "forgotten." He tells us that "no one" knew where it was. That centers the story--and the reader, too--in a British point of view. The British didn't know where that city was.Let's assume there was, in fact, a city. If you centered the story in an Indigenous point of view, would we be reading "no one" knew where it was? I doubt it. For various reasons, Indigenous people who knew where it was might withhold its location from the likes of Fawcett. By the time Fawcett was traipsing about, the Indigenous people of South America had been fighting Brits for literally, hundreds of years. British expeditions were all over South America, looking for riches and enslaving Indigenous people to work on plantations and in mines. My point: British people didn't know where it was; saying "nobody" means that the only people who count, in this book, are British. The next pages in The Quest for Z tell us that every since he was little, Fawcett had dreams of traveling the world and exploring new places. On page 6, we see an illustration of him as a baby, holding a globe. On page 7, there's this one, too, showing him as a little boy, a teenager, and then as an adult. Overall, he looks harmless. Some might even say he looks endearing. You're supposed to see him that way. You're supposed to cheer for him. You're supposed to like him. You're supposed to want to go on his adventures with him.Percy Fawcett's first trip to South America was in 1906. When preparing for that trip, Pizzoli tells us that Fawcett took "gifts for any potentially hostile tribes he might encounter" (p. 12).That's all we get. Tribes who might be hostile. Why, though, might they feel unfriendly to Europeans? Do children who are reading this book have the knowledge they need to process why Indigenous people are being characterized as "hostile"? Pizzoli does nothing to tell children (or adults) why they might be hostile. If a book like this is going to be done, I think it is important to contextualize things like that. Leaving them simply as "hostile tribes" affirms and feeds ignorance.A few pages later, Pizzoli tells us about an expedition down the Rio Negro. The river got rough, so they had to get out of the water and carry their canoes through the forest to find safer waters. One of the crew went off to look for a route they could go on and didn't return. They found him, dead, "with forty-two arrows in his body" (p. 19).We aren't told who shot those 42 arrows, but we know who it was. Someone from those hostile tribes. We're supposed to feel bad for that fellow, there, with those arrows in him. Count them if you wish; Pizzoli made sure there are 42. Because this whole story is being told to us from a British (White) point of view, we're meant to see that man as courageous as he tried to find a better route. The account of his death is in the Exploration Fawcett, too. In it, Fawcett writes that the river was "infested" by "the dreaded Pascaguara Indians" (p. 115). Infested? Again, I wondered why this picture book for children was written. Fawcett was clearly racist but in Pizzoli's book, none of that comes through. We get lots of images of Fawcett as a jolly and courageous fellow.Turning the page, we learn that on another of his trips, Fawcett was warned to stay away from a certain area because "the natives who lived there would attack outsiders" (p. 20). The use of "outsiders" is the closest we get to a reason why the Native peoples there would respond as they did but I think it is far from sufficient. We already know that Fawcett is not one to turn away from danger. He goes on, despite the warnings.Soon, poison-tipped arrows fell from the sky. Fawcett and his crew were surrounded. He gave a bizarre order. The order? He told his crew to sing. They sang British songs. One guy played an accordion. It worked. The arrows stopped, and, "the two groups parted as friends." That account--about singing--is in the "Good Savage" chapter of Exploration Fawcett. Again, I wonder why this book was written, published, and why it is getting such rave reviews? What we have, in Pizzoli's book, is this:--hostile tribes--a British man killed by some of those hostile tribespeople--natives who would attack outsiders but who were won over by British music.Readers are not shown any of the Indigenous peoples in the places Percy Fawcett went. Instead, we have words about them, and illustrations of their poison-tipped arrows in and all around British men. In short, we have biased and stereotypical content. The "hostile tribes" in The Quest for Z are a stereotype. They are the Indians who attack, apparently without provocation or reason. We're meant to understand them as savages. But were they? In fact, they were attacking outsiders because those outsiders had been taking family members into slavery. Let's be real about what was going on! They were fighting to protect their moms. Their kids. Their dads, grandparents, and their siblings. Some of those "hostile" Indians are simple minded, lulled out of their aggression by British song.I noted above that I read Fawcett's writings as I reviewed Pizzoli's picture book. In the chapter titled River of Evil, Fawcett wrote about how construction of a railroad had driven Indigenous people from their homelands in Madeira. He shares a story told to him by a "half-caste" who described finding two Indigenous people who went on a hunger strike to protest what was happening. One died, but the other? "We strung him up to a tree by the heels and had a little rifle practice on him. He died at the eight shot. It was great fun!" (p. 123).During those trips, Fawcett continued to hear about that lost city. In April of 1925, he set out to find it. Newspapers carried reports of his progress. In his last report, he wrote that he expected to find the city in August. But that was, in fact, his last report. He didn't return. Since then, Pizzoli tells readers in the final pages of his book, many treasure hunters, fame seekers, and movie stars have tried to find out what happened to him. As many as a hundred of them have gone missing, too.On the last page (p. 40), Pizzoli tells us that Fawcett is famous--not for his success--but for his failure. His "amazing adventures" and his "unparalleled passion" give him a place in history. With his book, Pizzoli adds to this racist man having a place in history. But with this book, Pizzoli also adds to, and affirms, stereotypes of Indigenous people. He's made colonialism a good thing. It was not.So--again--why did this book get published? What does it offer?Obviously, I do not recommend Greg Pizzoli's The True Story of Explorer Percy Fawcett and a Lost City in the Amazon. In the first paragraph of his Author's Note, Pizzoli writes that, as he worked on this biography, he felt like he had lost his way, but he kept on working on this book because, he writes in the fourth paragraph, "we all hunt for unknowable answers, and dream of places where the problems of our lives will dissolve away." He's right. Many of us do that, but I wish Pizzoli had set the manuscript aside--or that he'd written it in a way that was critical of racism, stereotypical ideas, and colonialism. He didn't do that, though, and so--we've got another book for children that denigrates Native peoples. This vicious cycle, continues, and we're all the worse for it.

This biography of explorer Percy Fawcett is beautifully illustrated and well told. Pizzoli likes to choose historical figures that are unpopular or famous for the wrong reason. In this case, Fawcett never actually found a Lost City, and died in his pursuit of it. I think it's important for children to read about failure sometimes, and to realize that a life lived doing what one is passionate about is a success in itself.
