I purchased several of these books as gifts and one for myself. I have other Waggoner Christmas books and this one was good although some paragraphs were copies of information in the other books. The craft information is good although some instructions were not as clear as I'd like to see. The main reason for 3 stars is the pictures. They are so small as to be difficult to see detail or read the writing on catalog pages. I'm certain it is due to space limitations but, without a magnifying glass to see them clearly, the pictures don't have the impact they would if they had been made larger. One book was given to a woman in her 80's. I'll be interested to know if she liked the book and could easily see the pictures.I'm still a junkie for Christmas books but Waggoner's previous books did have much larger but not as many pictures.
Beautiful book.Reading this text made me nostalgic for the Christmas' of the fifties and sixties. The artwork was so beautiful and reading about the Christmas toys of the sixties, including Captain Action, View Masters, and assorted space stuff was great. Ms. Waggoner did her research well. Illustrations from those decades are flush with bright reds, brilliant blues, and warm greens. Some excellent essays on the season as well. I am sure every Christmas has its problems, but I miss those seasons of yore, where it "seemed" things were slower paced. Adorable, well priced, book. I first saw this book at my local library and checked it out for the allotted 2wks. During that time I fell in love with it and had to have a copy of my own. Great pictures and price lists for each decade. The price lists show the cost of common christmas items both at that time and in today's dollar equivalent, very informative for vintage collectors. Also a great history pertaining to the commercialization of christmas.
great gift for anyone, especially older people or those with an interest in recent history. If I could only buy one of this type of book, I would, however, choose "Under the Tree", as it is more all-encompassing. But this is a great addition to a historical holiday book collection. Looks great on the coffee Table by the Christmas tree all holiday season, and fun to just pick up and read a page or two here or there, as well as reading it straight through!
Fun walk down memory lane. Grew up in the 60's so it was interesting to read about all the decades. Beautiful illustrations definitely a happy book that makes you smile!
Easily the best of the trilogy of Waggoner's Christmas-themed books. This one has a lot of heart, with personal accounts excerpted from interviews and old letters. Very enjoyable, quick read, with a lot of focus on decor in each decade. Presented chronologically.
Loved the book. I bought one for myself and another for my sister. She loved it too! It will always come out at Christmas to set on the coffee table. Thanks much. The shipping was fast!
I love this book...it was so wonderful to take a walk down memory lane at Christmas time.
