I received an advanced uncorrected proof as part of the Vine program.I have been performing for the past 30+ years either at work or on stage as a conference presenter in front of hundreds this is an extremely good book. First off, this book has an incredible amount of content far more than I was expecting. So expect to spend some quality time to read through cover to cover. The book is also well structured and flows from one concept to the next in, what seems to me, a logical path.There are sections of this book I want some of my colleagues and clients to read. Like the section on "Yes and ..." because too many naysayers really does throw off the momentum of progress. And I think a lot of the chapters would help people grow up and become adults. Especially some of the younger generation coming into the working ranks need to read the section on Risk. Because far too many are taking risks they shouldn't be especially when they keep saying "no."As a presenter at various technical conferences over the last couple of decades I appreciated how Mr. Port addresses presentations, finding your voice, goals, etc. Those sections will certainly change my focus toward how I approach future presentations "as if". And I think that is a good thing for me. I was hoping when I got this book I would actually learn something and I did (unlike a lot of other books in this space).

We tend to focus on the latest and greatest cool feature, though we don't relate why the tech is important or what was the grand idea behind it very well. We especially don't show why it's personal. I've presented at industry conferences before but never seemed to get the great feedback that I sought. I got a copy of Steal The Show to improve my presentations.I got more than I anticipated. Steal The Show is a book that demands your time to get the most out of it. If you follow the content and do the work, the results are going to amaze you. It will take time to digest this information as this isn't a read once and never pick up again kind of book. I find myself referring back to it over and over again.I first expected to read a book on making better speeches. Instead, my whole viewpoint and approach was changed. I must say that Michael has ruined me. After reading this book, I won't ever be able to sit through another mediocre presentation. I can now tell when the speaker threw the presentation together on the plane to the event. My expectations have been permanently raised for both other presenters and myself.Steal The Show provides a different thought process for developing and delivering your speeches than found in other speaking books. It goes beyond mere speaking techniques and into full blown performance planning and delivery. My biggest ah-ha moment was learning to approach it as a performance instead of a speech and that the performance starts much earlier than when you start speaking.I was asked to give a project management presentation on resource capacity. I had given it previously to lukewarm results. The presentation was dry and facts heavy. The audience usually sat through most of it but I always lost a lot of people toward the end.Using the techniques in the book, I reimagined and transformed it into a true performance on why we should be working less hours to be more productive. I made it personal, communicating how these changes had a direct impact on my family. Part of my issue was that the big idea was getting lost in the details. I restructured it from a curriculum speech to an idea speech. I organized the content using the problem/solution framework. The audience response was completely different. They were engaged. No one left early and people talked to me about it during the entire event.The Steal The Show process changed how I put my performance together. I had to put in the time developing the content, scripting it, reading it out loud and rehearsing it. The scripting process was new for me as I tended to outline the content and wing it from there. Reading it out loud was something that I had never done but it made a huge difference in the sound. When you are making your decisions about what to say in rehearsal instead of in real-time, your performance is easier to give.I also stopped agonizing over the slides using the STS process. Once I had done the appropriate rehearsal, I know the performance well enough to do it without slides, which I almost had to do. Thankfully, the point on doing a tech check saved me. We discovered the projector bulb had burned out and being the first presenter, I wouldn't have had slides.I am a much more effective public speaker today thanks to the Steal The Show techniques. I strongly encourage you to buy this book and give them a try.

This is the second time I've completed this book and I suspect there will be a third. This is not a book to rush through and given the shorter attention spans of our generations, I think the short but dense chapters are best read one at a time. I've carried the softcover Image paperback edition containing the William Johnston translation and now have the Kindle edition with an introduction by Huston Smith (who singlehandedly changed my former fundamentalist ways).Johnston is an Irish Jesuit priest whose vocation has done much to bridge the wisdom traditions of East and West. If you are not of a sound ecumenical mind, you may want to skip his introduction which shows the parallels of this text with the rejection of concepts that can be found in certain Buddhist schools. Perhaps the first time, I read this book I found this aspect to be of the utmost interest along with the focused counsels of not overthinking or the casting of reason to enter naked contemplation, without focusing on any aspect of one's own being. Or as the anonymous author of the text states, "do not think what you are but that you are."Now that I am older and somewhat fatigued by the onslaught of evangelical trumpeters that surround me and crowd my everyday existence, I found myself returning to those things that inspired me when I was younger and the world seemed to be full of promise. My renewed interest in all things Arthurian led me to pick up this 14th century text written by an Englishman, who does not want us reading his book out of mere curiosity or for the sake of knowledge. And yet, even as I may have fallen somewhat in these categories, I found renewed refreshment in this book just when I thought Christianity to have lost its relevance in this topsy-turvy world.When I was younger, i read to put myself somewhere. With university behind me and quiet evenings of reflection and study at my small desk, I have found the acceptance of the turmoils that surround me to look beyond. Now, I strive to be nowhere because "nowhere, physically, is everywhere spiritually."Like a Grail-seeking Galahad, I draw from this book as from a refreshing and nourishing chalice "with a gentle stirring of love" without expectations, realizing my limitations without having to endlessly define them and pressing forward into that supra-conceptual and "dark cloud of unknowing."Note: there are other editions of this medieval classic, but the Johnston translation includes "The Book of Privy Counsel" which may be read across a lifetime.

This book contains two streams of useful, highly spiritual thought. The first part grounds you in a dedicated and devotional practice that cuts away at all the emotional and (sometimes) spiritual baggage acquired via various spiritual practices in your background. The teaching is potent and direct but not without heart. Recommendations and things to do along the way mix within the descriptive 75 brief lessons, resulting (hopefully) in understanding God better while continuing to live in the Cloud of Unknowing. The second part is geared for counseling yourself and others. Application of concepts in part one are woven into new fabric of spiritual dimension, that is, a more extrovert application than experienced in the first part. Either way this classic is a must for any serious student of religion and/or spirituality, from the most orthodox to New Thought.

Written in a very relaxed conversational style that is quite inviting and appropriate to the subject of contemplative prayer, I would highly recommend this edition. Contemplative prayer is the practice of entering into God's love. The author describes this love as the Cloud of Unknowing in which we loose ourselves in God's presence. Having stood the test of time (written in the 14th century) the Cloud of Unknowing feels quite contemporary, yet cuts through the superficial spirituality that is pervasive today to provide a robust connection with God and tradition.While I come out of the Christian tradition, I would think that the Cloud of Unknowing would be helpful to people of other faith traditions who are seeking a spiritual awareness. It's concepts and language would be quite easily adapted. I think that most people who approach the book with an open mind will find that they are drawn closer to the divine.

I had read The Cloud of Unknowing before, but in archaic English style that made it difficult to follow. It wasn't very accessible. Even though this translation has been in print for quite some time, it seems fresh. For me it made all the difference. With this translation spirituality oozes out of each chapter, so it is uplifting and a delight to read. I'm glad that unlike other books out there, it included The Book of Privy Counseling, which I found to be a concise summary of much of the material in the Cloud of Unknowing - pared down and to the point. I actually like it better than the more famous Cloud of Unknowing.Anyone who practices contemplative prayer, or one of its many-named variants, will appreciate this classic text. Just goes to show that when you get to the heart of the matter, a fourteenth century work is as relevant today as it was back then.

Well what can I say? If you are interested in the contemplative way then this is the book to read -- if you dare -- given the introduction to the book suggesting that you not read it if you are only interested in the unknown of a spiritual tradition for the sake of intellectual curiosity and not practice.

If more Catholics read books like this, including priest and bishops, the Church would be better off. The only thing you can know for sure is that you don't know much about God. This author understood that centuries ago.

This timeless classic is a must read for anyone who is serious in their prayer practice. Written nearly 700 years ago, the author touches the mystic that transcends religion, time, creed or geography. The translation reads easily, and any modern reader will appreciate both the introduction as well as the modern English translation of the original. All of the Shire books I have seen have been quite educational and nicely done.This book is in that catagory although it is for a beginner in collecting or studying scarabs.Very informative.

I think this was mostly words, without many pictures. I got it for the pictures of scarabs. Blah. Maybe someday I'll read it.

I received my copy of this fantastic text three days ago; then I put all my attention to scam it. I'm a disciple of Dr. Ghaemi philosophy and viewpoints since my early years of residency until now. Every piece of thought written by him embraces the "humanistic psychiatry" approach. This is not a classical Psychopharmacology text, like those of Dr. Stahl. The text is aimed at curbing the "neuromythology" of following theoretical knowledge for caring of patients without valid clinical evidence. It challenges the common "Galenic" approach of relying on neurotransmitter changes and promote the "Hippocratic" approach to treat only identified diseases and give symptoms watchful care without harm. The text presents a philosophy for the humanistic mental health care more than presenting drug info. Dr. Ghaemi has put a lot of his personal experience tips on managing adverse drug problems. I think this text is complimentary and augmenting other classical neuroscientific books of Psychopharmacology. Whatever the drug x is changing they neurotransmitter or modulating the z receptor, don't rely on this without valid clinical data from controlled trials. This is the bottom line of the text.

I am going to school to become a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. The Stahl Books were used as our textbooks, but I wanted another viewpoint. This book is new so it has up-to-date Information on new series and new drugs. The Author puts forward some very interesting information about all matters regarding treating mental health issues. As a student I love this book because it makes me think about things in a different way and provide so much information. Neuroanatomy and neurobiology can be challenging for me,but this doctor/author writes well and explains things in a way that I can understand! Highly recommended for those becoming PMHNPs.

Dr. Ghaemi is brilliant, honest and science based. Psychiatry has suffered at the hands of the DSM. We are the only medical profession that treats "Disorders" vs "Disease". Symptom prescribing is non-scientific and dangerous. Dr. Ghaemi's Psychopharm. book is a beautiful guide to science based prescribing.

Really did learn a lot about bipolar disorder and how to better treat it.

For some reason I cannot give a review on the kindle edition, so I will give my review for the paperback version.I liked it! I was able to read this in a long afternoon, and it kept me entertained throughout. Lots of twists and turns, and a very good cliffhanger ending, which made sense when the title implies that season 2 should be forthcoming. It also avoided a lot of common tropes and stereotypes when it came to the lesbian couple, which was most gratifying.Can't wait for season 2!

And what an innovative figure on feminism development.But that's only as far I could go about loving the book.As an adult, I could embrace and appreciate how Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre "lived their love story in their own unique way," but I am not all sure how I want to explain to my child about their uniqueness of courtship if he ever asks at his age. And don't forget de Beauvoir's controversial sex scandal with one of her students that eventually got her teaching licence revoked permanently. I have no reservation about de Beauvoir's contributions as a philosopher, a writer, a feminism advocate. Her name, I concur, should be introduced to younger generations, but probably not to children under age of 10. True, her personal past, though, had nothing to with de Beauvoir's accomplishments, but I strongly believe role models to young children, especially, should be someone with positive images. To simply put, Simone de Beauvoir was too complex a person to be featured in a picture book for young children.I enjoyed the book myself, but I probably won't include this addition to my child's personal library for at least few extra years.

This edition in the Little People, Big Dreams series by Isabel Sanchez Vegara introduces children to the life of Simone de Beauvoir, (known best as the mother of feminism) in the form of a picture book.If you follow my blog, you already know how much I love this series. Love. Love. Love. And I truly appreciate introducing historical women who have changed the world or left an indelible footprint on it. In particular, I love the introduction of strong, intelligent, independent women like Simone de Beauvoir, who arguably paved some of the foundational pieces of the women’s movement. However, I felt this particular book didn’t go quite deep enough. While I appreciate that the intended audience is children, there has to be enough information to impress upon the reader why this particular woman was important. It does very little good to introduce children to the most important feminist in history if you don’t first explain feminism and why it’s important. I believe this can be accomplished in a manner that is appropriate for children, but that didn’t happen here.Despite that bit of disappointment, her independent lifestyle, academic pursuits, and social activism are all discussed in the book and she is certainly a worthwhile figure to introduce to children.Not my favorite in this series, but still worth a read.Note: I received this book from the publisher via Netgalley. I pride myself on writing fair and honest reviews.

I am becoming a huge fan of the "Little People, Big Dreams" series. There are so many great people, but many biographies go unread. This series peaks the interest of young readers with basic, simple facts about the person with the hope that they will do further investigation on their own. This was not my favourite in the series as I found it a bit dry and may not be of interest to young readers, but it was still a good addition to the series.Simone de Beauvoir was born to a well-to-do family, who lost their fortune, yet she had received a good education so was able to support herself. Her father had proclaimed that "she thinks like a man" which really was an insult when you think about it. She chose not to have children, but become a writer (even today when a woman states that she does not want children, eyebrows are raised). She wrote a lot about women's rights. She pretty much became a feminist before there were women recognized as such (back then they were called trouble-makers!). I must admit to not knowing about Simone de Beauvoir. Her story is told with historical context as well as having a timeline at the back of the book. The illustrations are large and vibrant and add much to the text. I think this is a good series and book to be in any school library. It shows children that you can make a difference if you believe in something and do whatever you can to change things that are wrong. I also like that these books can be used with older students to help them decide who they would like to learn more about. A Social Justice project could be inspired by these books. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book upon request. The rating, ideas and opinions shared are my own.
