This is nowhere near the complete Dead Sea scrolls, and I'm not referring to the portions that are absent due to the original text being damaged and unreadable, I'm talking about entire sections that exist in English but for some reason are not included in this "complete" collection. Firstly, it only contains the non-biblical Dead Sea scrolls but even those suffer a painful abridgement. For example, the Genesis Apocryphon does not include any text from columns 3, 4, 5, 8, 9 or 10 (and go figure I was specifically needing column 5). The introduction even admits that they exist and have even been translated and is kind enough to provide information on where to look if you wish to read them. Kind, yes, but insulting given the book's title and $22 price mark.If this were called "Abridged Portions of Selected Dead Sea Scrolls in English" I would respect it as that would be a wonderfully accurate title, but we all know that it would not sell nearly as well as it has if it had been labeled honestly. This blatant marketing deception fueled by greed is probably to be placed upon Penguin Classics and not the late Geza Vermes, who is an exceptional biblical scholar.

I thought if I got the original 1998 translation it would be "complete". It is not.The first book of Enoch has been reduced to a single nonsensical paragraph.The second book of Enoch is completely missing.The book of Giants is also reduced to a single nonsensical paragraph.The book of Jubilees is also reduced to a few nonsensical paragraphs.These are the very first things I noticed missing. I was kind of shocked that with a book called "complete dead sea scrolls" so much would be missing.The Table of Contents is very misleading. Some of the names attributed to particular scrolls are uniquely the author's and not named elsewhere by anyone because they are too incomplete to mean anything.Get the Florentino Garcia Martinez Dead Sea Scrolls. It is the most complete copy out there.

I'm taking an upper level history course on Dead Sea Scrolls, and this is one of my two texts for the class. I'm very impressed with the accuracy of translation and the writing competency of the author. It is clearly written and documents all of the non-Biblical writings found in the Dead Sea sea scrolls.When I first got the book, I was disappointed that the books of the Bible and Torah had been omitted from the work, but I soon learned in class that these were readily available in (drumroll, please) the Bible and the Torah. The significance of the scrolls is that they confirm the accuracy of the already-known but younger copies of these much-read and loved works. Although the scrolls are over a thousand years older than any of the previously known extant writings, they are almost identical to the newer copies!The scrolls included in this book are peshars, midrashes and targums (commentaries on Biblical books such as Nahum and Habakkuk); a Community Rule for the sect which apparently lived at Qumran, a settlement near the caves where the scrolls were found; eschatological writings regarding the end of times (such as the War Scroll); and directives to the Leader of the sect which presided over the congregation. Very, very interesting window on sectarian life.The only complaint I have--and it's probably one born of ignorance--is that it is somewhat difficult to find specific documents by using the indices at the end of the book. I'm never sure I've completed a reading assignment because of the cluttered way that the manuscripts are referenced. But when I consider how many thousands of fragments were organized and of how many copies of the same text were found in 11 different caves, it's no wonder the index is so complex. Some people use this book to study only ONE of the copies of a document. So all of the works must be referenced and cross-referenced in the index--not just the best preserved of the bunch.Likewise, in reading the translations of the manuscripts, the brackets and parentheses, used in the middle of words and sentences to distinguish between texts from different caves, are rather distracting because they aren't utilized in the manner that I'm accustomed to in reading and writing. It takes a little getting used to. But it is a very effective means for the writer to pull together a fragment of a document from one cave to fill in missing text from another copy of the same document found in another cave.I don't know if any of that even makes sense. This is a book which really needs a companion text, such as James VanderKam's The Dead Sea Scrolls Today. Unless you already know the history of the sect and how the scrolls were discovered, the manuscripts alone are fairly meaningless to the modern reader.It was a daunting task, assembling the fragments of the scrolls and cataloging all of the documents found in those caves. To organize all of that information into one cohesive anthology and then translate it from Aramaic, Hebrew and Greek into English and other languages is nothing short of heroic. Vermes is a brilliant man indeed.

The title of this book is a blatant lie. It is not complete. It is not even close to complete. It is priced cheaply and is quite worthwhile, but do not expect to receive this and get the complete Dead Sea Scrolls. No Biblical scrolls are included. None. That is an entirely different volume from a different publisher. While the line of Penguin Classics is overall a superb way to make world literature accessible to a wide audience, dis-naming this book is entirely unacceptable.

I would have given it a five except for the fact that it was missing a couple of manuscript fragments which possibly were discovered after its publication but I doubt it. The most obvious and important item missing being Isaiah scroll, a major find complete in its entirety .Otherwise it is an excellent translation and very needed..

I really enjoyed reading this book. As a Christian, I feel that what I believe began with what the Jews believed and I love learning as much about God, "bless His name", as I can. (I learned from this book to bless God's name whenever used.) It was a little difficult to keep track of the Hebrew and Yiddish names and words used, but there is a brief list of some of the more common terms used in the back of the book.The author used a nice format for describing each section that I caught onto after about the third time he started a new topic. He would start with the oldest concepts and discuss as these evolved over time during different developmental times of Jewish thought. I'm not sure I can remember them all, but it was something like this, age of the Talmud (as it was written by Moses), times of the Priests (while the 1st and 2nd Temple existed), then when the 2nd temple was destroyed and no more sacrifices could be made Jewish thought was regulated by the Rabbis and the most popular of them established large and influential schools to study the Talmud and interpret it to the people, often coming up with new thought and conflicting opinion. The Middle Ages brought a time of acceptance of some of the concepts of the Arab schools, Greek Philosophy, and even some Christian thinking on God. Then the period of "Modern" (1800's) thought is covered as scholars started to use a more scientific process to study word structure, archeology, and critical thought to try to determine Biblical (Talmudic) accuracy. Then finally, a description of current thinking from the different Jewish groups Orthodox, Reformed, Ameican, etc. Also, included are discussions of the school of mystic Jewish thought, Kaballa, which arose in Spain and was influential in several periods.Of course, being Jewish, the author says Christians are confused and there were many false Messiahs including Jesus. He implies he can't believe that anyone would believe for 2000 years Jesus was the Messiah since none of the expectations of what the Messiah would do were accomplished by Jesus. (They expected the Messiah to be a mortal man and military ruler who will defeat the enemies of the Jews and rebuild King David's Kingdom on Earth.) And that the followers of Jesus purposely searched the Talmud to find and distort prophetic passages to use as "proof" of Jesus being the Messiah.So, as I understand this book to say, Jewish thought is an evolving understanding of man's relationship to his creator. It changes and grows over time and can be influenced by changing human conditions like the horror of the Holocaust, and influenced by other things like scientific and archeological discoveries, etc. The Jew is responsible to God, bless His name, for following the instructions set down in the Talmud and interpreted by the Rabbis. His salvation is based on following these regulations, and that most of them have an aspect of doing "good deeds" for others including family, friends, the poor, the widow, orphans, and others who are less fortunate. Prayer is part of the regulations and helps to include the Jew in developing a sense of belonging to the community of worshippers.There is lots more great information in this book and I recommend you read it for yourself​.

This is a cute variation of the Harem genre. The ubiquitously over-courteous, soft-spoken Japanese guy is vigorously pursued by a variety of women (in this case, of different species of monster).The comedy is good. Again, very stereotypically harem-manga, but it still works quite well. There's also a glut of very bad (humorously bad) puns, most of which had to have been added by the translators, or at least adapted well.The flirtation is just at the edge of sexual, so don't expect the light-hearted, childlike atmosphere of "Oh, My Goddess!", but (of course) anything outright sexual is inevitably interrupted by the someone or some event. Plenty of bare monsters' chests and even a hind end or two, but I'd guess it would be a strong PG-13 or weak R rating.Overall, a cute variation on the harem genre, with enough creativity that I'm going to be picking up the 2nd volume.

Adorable manga series! As someone who isn't much into harems I have to say I enjoy this one a lot. It's different with it's cast and it's humor is spot on! Though the manga does say it's recommended for ages 16 and older I'm going to have to say that it should be 18 or older. This series contains sexual content and slang and fully features breasts. So I don't think it would be a good idea for a 16 year old to be bringing this to their high school.Other than that really recommend it!

Great series, love the uncensored artwork, and the 'ecchi-without-being-totally-ecchi" vibe Okayado gives the series.

Hilarious fun with lots of fanservice and puns and innuendo! Another good natured average guy who winds up with a harem of monster girls who are literally Bird brained in their behaviour.

This is such a trash Ecchi manga and I love it! It has a cute and engaging story (that is totally contrived) and is a total fan-service guilty pleasure.

One of the few manga that I could not stop reading. It was truly a treat. Better than the anime. I will give a heads up that there is some nudity.

Alright, so this continued to pop up in my "Recommended For You" on Amazon, so I thought: "Why Not?" I regret NOTHING! An amazing storyline of your Average Joe, named Kurusu Kimihito, getting caught up in a predicament where he is basically a foster home for a half-woman, half-snake (Lamias), named Miia. The whole ordeal is the government is "experimenting" on whether humans and Liminals (part-humans) can live together in harmony, but NO INTERSPECIES BREEDING! Well, that's kind of hard to do when 20-something Kurusu is constantly being flirted, encouraged, and provoked by our sexy Miia.Oh and don't worry, there is PLENTY of fanservice, and by fanservice, I mean the first 5 pages might cause a nosebleed :3I won't spoil anything but I'll just say it was so good, I immediately bought Volume 2 right after reading this and already have Volume 3 on preorder. If you like Fanservice, Herems, Fantasy, or even laughing until you develop a six-pack I HIGHLY recommend this series!

Leonard Sax, M.D., Ph.D., is a graduate of MIT and the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned both his Ph.D. (in psychology) and his M.D. He is board-certified in family medicine. In Girls on the Edge Sax discusses four factors that are driving our girls down a path of self-destruction. In Boys Adrift you learn that males can be quite lazy. However, in Girls on the Edge, Sax shows how the will to succeed causes girls pain and anguish. Some would term his observations old-fashioned but it's hard to argue with his plainly stated research. Gender roles, when based on facts and figures, carry a great deal of weight. To be clear, different does not mean inferior as some may assume. The idea that men and women are exactly the same will someday be old fashioned. I believe Sax's work is a trend towards embracing our differences as men and women which in the long run will strengthen both sexes and subsequently our families.The first factor is that of sexual identity. The chapter consisted a lot of what I expected; the over-sexualization of young girls and that the sexual empowerment movement has led many girls to be disempowered. If girls aren't given the proper direction, their sexual identity will look to be fulfilled in ways that will leave them dissatisfied, emotional wrecks. The world tells them to be sexual; that it's the only way they'll be accepted. You as the parent must notice this and protect your daughter.The second factor he calls the cyberbubble. In this chapter he discusses how social networking (ie facebook, myspace, etc) and the cell phone have driven girls into their own unfulfilling worlds where they look for something and get a lot but find nothing of substance. Parents whose girls are suffering because of this social cyber-world look for answers in prescriptions when all that really needs to be done is limiting time online.Thirdly, Sax discusses obsessions. We expect a lot of our girls and they work extremely hard at numerous activities. Because of the changes in our world these last fifty years our girls have been given the green light to succeed with the talents they have been given and this is tremendous news. However, many go so far as to risk injury and well-being. How good is good enough? Some girls and their parents don't know so they never quit. Sax discusses the dangerousness of this and presents real world examples that could save your daughter's life.The fourth factor, like in Boys Adrift, discusses environmental toxins. Sax asks and answers questions that may still leave you wondering, but his facts make sense. Whatever you believe after reading about the dangerous chemicals in your daughters lotion, something is going on when girls are hitting puberty at age 8. Also, can a man cause his daughter's puberty to delay until a more appropriate time? According to Sax it is likely.In the final portion of the book Sax discusses your daughters mind, body, and spirit in an unpretentious manner. I appreciate this as it enables a person of any faith or creed to consider what they want for their daughter. His method for these final chapters will cause all parents to wonder on a level beyond sports and school just what they are doing for their daughters growth and development.Sax does speak from a point of view (POV) of someone who lives in a large metropolitan area. He talks about moving your daughter to another school if it doesn't work for her. Not many have this option. Also, his experience seems to come largely from preparatory schools that an average parent would have no idea about. While I have a tough time relating to his POV, his research is rock solid. You will just have to adapt it to your situation.Some reviewers have complained of few practical actions Sax offers and that the book is more theory. This is true but the practicality comes as he discusses patients and what worked for them and their parents. I'm a counselor and loved the book as it helped me understand the teen girls I work with and particularly my own daughter. Tactics for parenting are very useful, but Sax answers a lot of "why" questions about teen girls and this is invaluable.

Leonard Sax is an excellent researcher and scientist/doctor who has captured clearly the problems faced by young girls in our overly permissive society that can "drive them off the rails". This book needs to be read by most current or future parents of daughters who want their girls to grow up healthy and happy.

What I like about his books, not only does he give you the information that your obviously looking for by buying this book, but he gives you tons and tons of research that backs everything up. You get examples of real people that relate to today's world. Very good. I've read 2 of his books.

I think every mother should read this regardless of whether they have daughters or not. It offers insight into living as a girl or woman in this day and age. I particularly like that it is research based.

I'm a first time mom trying to raise a little girl with high self esteem and a sense of self in this crazy internet bullying, over scheduled world that has been created for children. Dr. Sax gives a lot of good insight on things to look out for and antidotal stories about kids with these problems.

WoW! I haven't earmarked so many pages in a book before. Dr. Sax gives so really practical information and some great ideas to consider. If you have a daughter I would HIGHLY recommend this book. It gives some true insight into how girls are raised in our society these days. If I had a boy, I would buy his other book as well.

The book was in excellent condition and contained information vitally important for people raising and working with girls.

Ok so this is the third book I have read by Sax. He knows his craft. If you have a daughter you should, without a doubt, devote 5 hours to be a better parent to her.

I could not put this book down. I was so mad that her horrible parents, who had to have known what was happening to her did not do anything to stop it. Then she gets the blame from the pedophile who did all these horrible things to her since she was very young. His wife blamed her. How can you blame a child. Also he most likely moved onto his own young daughter. I was so mad at all she went through. It sure opens your eyes to just how a child molester gets his victims. I was wishing he got taken away to jail, put with all the prisoners who hate child molesters, and let them take care of him. There were some parts that were hard to read. I had tears in my eyes at times for what she endured in her young life. I will not give the ending away.

This is a dpressing and educational book about how a child molester chooses and sets up his victims. This should be required reading for every parent. The people who you would least suspect often are the worst offenders. This is a story that goes from the present to the sad childhood of the Author. How she managed to live her life without the help of family or therapy is amazing. The story touches on how a disfunctional family can leave a child vunerable. You will have a hard time putting this book down.

Admirably written, heart wrenching, and deeply personal true life account of a small child's parental neglect and betrayal and the heart breaking exploitation and sexual abuse by the vial man next door. Marianne's choice to share her heart breaking childhood with us shows me she didn't let her painful past define her. She freed herself of the bonds of adversity and has triumphed to become a hero to me. Thank you for sharing your story..

This book is well written switching from past to present. It tells the life story of a woman who was abused and molested from the age of 8 by the pedophile next door. She became pregnant at 13 years old an had to give up the baby and do it all alone emotionally. I don't want to spoil the ending so I will stop here.

All child abuse is hard to comprehend, but this neglected and abused girl finally found real love in her present life and closure to her childhood. She triumphed in the end! I highly recommend this book.

This book brought tears to my eyes more than once . I gave this book a five star because it takes one Hellova women to overcome a child hood like that trust me I know . This book reads fast and smooth with one hell of a story that will break your heart .

If you enjoy reading about people that rise from terrible situations you will love this book. What this woman lived through and turned out so well is amazing. The only more amazing thing is the wonderful, UNDERSTANDING MAN SHE MARRIED. A very well written heart felt book.

As I read this book it became clear to me that this kind of thing happens in real life but it doesn't make it right. And two the author thank you for sharing part of your life with us. As I turned the pages of this book I felt your sorrow. I was happy to read that your husband was good to you, you sure deserve it! I found most of the essays in this book mildly interesting. Unfortunately, the author does not have any academic or professional training in nutrition, and this lack of knowledge shows. For example, the author equates 'protein' with animal products and uses this as a convenient rationalization for a diet heavy in animal products, which undoubtedly brings her much pleasure but is unnecessary from a nutritional standpoint (it's better to think of amino acid composition rather than 'protein'). The book has a UK flavor (sorry, flavour), which is a tad amusing since many people believe that 'British foodie' is an oxymoron due to the notoriously unpalatable nature of British cuisine (just ask the French!) The author is careful to avoid making sweeping generalizations regarding the desirability of food processing in all of its many forms, which is a good thing.

This book is positively addictive reading, even if a bit of it was awful news about food.What is processed food? Basically, it's almost everything you eat unless you are growing it or slaughtering it yourself. The origins of processed food lie in trying to safely preserve or store food. Going back to ancient techniques like smoking, salting, drying, and ice houses, Temple takes us forward to Kraft cheese and cheese in a can, all the way to the present day, filled with little mini-carrots and ready/frozen dinners. The big question and the point of Nicola Temple's book is *how* food was processed and whether the producer is transparent about the processing. From produce to cheese to bread to protein, to the deleterious effects of sugar, which is added to so many things. Temple closes out the book with a discussion of nanotechnology (a topic near and dear to my heart) and some of the caveats, and the future of processed food. I was quite fascinated and repelled by the chapter on cheese. And delighted with the literate discussion of celiac disease in the bread chapter.Temple's discussion of the convenience conundrum, which drives the production and consumption of processed food, is worth the price of admission. Our modern lifestyle has affected our perceptions and expectations of food. (I'm mindful of that report last year which said that many children thought chocolate milk came from brown cows and didn't know pickles were actually cucumbers.) The actual nutritional content of many of these convenient processed items is of concern. This book was written with a British slant but she also reports on information for Canadian and American readers. America's love affair with salt and sugar have taken firm hold in the UK. Other things to consider in "ready meals" include the caliber of the ingredients (bound to be the cheapest) and the fact that many micronutrients may be lost due to overcooking. Then there are the additives (things like carrageenan and gums) and preservatives (thinks like polyphosphates). Temple does provide a thoughtful discussion on the various forms of processing, including flash freezing, and why some frozen produce might be better than fresh bought produce artificially ripened with ethylene. (Less waste due to spoilage and froze at the peak of ripeness.)This book is fascinating enough to make me go and read Temple's previous outing, Sorting the Beef from the Bull: The Science of Food and Fraud Forensics, which sounds like a scary read.I received a Digital Review Copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

When I hear "processed food" I think of Velveeta or Doritos or frozen entrees. But this book is actually about a much more general concept, namely all the different ways foods have been (and are) processed and handled, going back to the stone age and looking forward to the future. Even frying an egg counts as food processing, or wrapping a green pepper (in a surprisingly high-tech material). Certain processes are especially interesting and get a good deal of attention, such as baking and cheesemaking, and the path that fruits and vegetables travel from farm to stomach. The book is full of fascinating tidbits of information, such as the surprising differences between the way that breads and cheeses are treated in Britain, France, and the US. And there are many surprises, such as the comparisons between the amount of ecological expense involved in various products, such as "baby" carrots (not actually young ones!) which I had always avoided on the grounds that they were wasteful, but which actually reduce product waste. My only complaint about the book is that many of the chemical activities that occur during processing aren't explained as clearly as they might have been for the general reader: I sometimes came away from a page shaking my head in puzzlement. Oh, and be aware that this is a British book, and food terms seem to be one of the areas that most strongly separate British and American English. We hear a lot about "mince" (apparently this means hamburger, not the content of mince pie), rockets, punnets, and aubergines, to mention just a few of the many British terms. A glossary might have been useful. There's a lot of good reading here, but prepare to be occasinally puzzled.

Best Before: The Evolution and Future of Processed Food was one of those books I wanted to love, but instead found to be slow, sometimes interesting, but overall a unengaging and textbook like read. The book is riddled with flaws, ranging from uninteresting and long winded explanations of food processing, author opinion as opposed to fact, and a lot of flip flopping from the author's perspective - even after finally finishing the book, I'm not quite sure where the author stands on processed food. The book was particularly difficult to read because the author's style constantly jumped from personal story, to really long history lesson, to incredibly indepth science explanation to analytical debate with herself complete with percentages and weights and etc. As much as I tried to read this book, I found myself putting down more often than not. Overall, while there are some interesting facts and stories in this book, it simply wasn't enjoyable enough to read again nor recommend.
