Leonard Sax, M.D., Ph.D., is a graduate of MIT and the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned both his Ph.D. (in psychology) and his M.D. He is board-certified in family medicine. In Girls on the Edge Sax discusses four factors that are driving our girls down a path of self-destruction. In Boys Adrift you learn that males can be quite lazy. However, in Girls on the Edge, Sax shows how the will to succeed causes girls pain and anguish. Some would term his observations old-fashioned but it's hard to argue with his plainly stated research. Gender roles, when based on facts and figures, carry a great deal of weight. To be clear, different does not mean inferior as some may assume. The idea that men and women are exactly the same will someday be old fashioned. I believe Sax's work is a trend towards embracing our differences as men and women which in the long run will strengthen both sexes and subsequently our families.The first factor is that of sexual identity. The chapter consisted a lot of what I expected; the over-sexualization of young girls and that the sexual empowerment movement has led many girls to be disempowered. If girls aren't given the proper direction, their sexual identity will look to be fulfilled in ways that will leave them dissatisfied, emotional wrecks. The world tells them to be sexual; that it's the only way they'll be accepted. You as the parent must notice this and protect your daughter.The second factor he calls the cyberbubble. In this chapter he discusses how social networking (ie facebook, myspace, etc) and the cell phone have driven girls into their own unfulfilling worlds where they look for something and get a lot but find nothing of substance. Parents whose girls are suffering because of this social cyber-world look for answers in prescriptions when all that really needs to be done is limiting time online.Thirdly, Sax discusses obsessions. We expect a lot of our girls and they work extremely hard at numerous activities. Because of the changes in our world these last fifty years our girls have been given the green light to succeed with the talents they have been given and this is tremendous news. However, many go so far as to risk injury and well-being. How good is good enough? Some girls and their parents don't know so they never quit. Sax discusses the dangerousness of this and presents real world examples that could save your daughter's life.The fourth factor, like in Boys Adrift, discusses environmental toxins. Sax asks and answers questions that may still leave you wondering, but his facts make sense. Whatever you believe after reading about the dangerous chemicals in your daughters lotion, something is going on when girls are hitting puberty at age 8. Also, can a man cause his daughter's puberty to delay until a more appropriate time? According to Sax it is likely.In the final portion of the book Sax discusses your daughters mind, body, and spirit in an unpretentious manner. I appreciate this as it enables a person of any faith or creed to consider what they want for their daughter. His method for these final chapters will cause all parents to wonder on a level beyond sports and school just what they are doing for their daughters growth and development.Sax does speak from a point of view (POV) of someone who lives in a large metropolitan area. He talks about moving your daughter to another school if it doesn't work for her. Not many have this option. Also, his experience seems to come largely from preparatory schools that an average parent would have no idea about. While I have a tough time relating to his POV, his research is rock solid. You will just have to adapt it to your situation.Some reviewers have complained of few practical actions Sax offers and that the book is more theory. This is true but the practicality comes as he discusses patients and what worked for them and their parents. I'm a counselor and loved the book as it helped me understand the teen girls I work with and particularly my own daughter. Tactics for parenting are very useful, but Sax answers a lot of "why" questions about teen girls and this is invaluable.

Leonard Sax is an excellent researcher and scientist/doctor who has captured clearly the problems faced by young girls in our overly permissive society that can "drive them off the rails". This book needs to be read by most current or future parents of daughters who want their girls to grow up healthy and happy.

What I like about his books, not only does he give you the information that your obviously looking for by buying this book, but he gives you tons and tons of research that backs everything up. You get examples of real people that relate to today's world. Very good. I've read 2 of his books.

I think every mother should read this regardless of whether they have daughters or not. It offers insight into living as a girl or woman in this day and age. I particularly like that it is research based.

I'm a first time mom trying to raise a little girl with high self esteem and a sense of self in this crazy internet bullying, over scheduled world that has been created for children. Dr. Sax gives a lot of good insight on things to look out for and antidotal stories about kids with these problems.

WoW! I haven't earmarked so many pages in a book before. Dr. Sax gives so really practical information and some great ideas to consider. If you have a daughter I would HIGHLY recommend this book. It gives some true insight into how girls are raised in our society these days. If I had a boy, I would buy his other book as well.

The book was in excellent condition and contained information vitally important for people raising and working with girls.

Ok so this is the third book I have read by Sax. He knows his craft. If you have a daughter you should, without a doubt, devote 5 hours to be a better parent to her.

I could not put this book down. I was so mad that her horrible parents, who had to have known what was happening to her did not do anything to stop it. Then she gets the blame from the pedophile who did all these horrible things to her since she was very young. His wife blamed her. How can you blame a child. Also he most likely moved onto his own young daughter. I was so mad at all she went through. It sure opens your eyes to just how a child molester gets his victims. I was wishing he got taken away to jail, put with all the prisoners who hate child molesters, and let them take care of him. There were some parts that were hard to read. I had tears in my eyes at times for what she endured in her young life. I will not give the ending away.

This is a dpressing and educational book about how a child molester chooses and sets up his victims. This should be required reading for every parent. The people who you would least suspect often are the worst offenders. This is a story that goes from the present to the sad childhood of the Author. How she managed to live her life without the help of family or therapy is amazing. The story touches on how a disfunctional family can leave a child vunerable. You will have a hard time putting this book down.

Admirably written, heart wrenching, and deeply personal true life account of a small child's parental neglect and betrayal and the heart breaking exploitation and sexual abuse by the vial man next door. Marianne's choice to share her heart breaking childhood with us shows me she didn't let her painful past define her. She freed herself of the bonds of adversity and has triumphed to become a hero to me. Thank you for sharing your story..

This book is well written switching from past to present. It tells the life story of a woman who was abused and molested from the age of 8 by the pedophile next door. She became pregnant at 13 years old an had to give up the baby and do it all alone emotionally. I don't want to spoil the ending so I will stop here.

All child abuse is hard to comprehend, but this neglected and abused girl finally found real love in her present life and closure to her childhood. She triumphed in the end! I highly recommend this book.

This book brought tears to my eyes more than once . I gave this book a five star because it takes one Hellova women to overcome a child hood like that trust me I know . This book reads fast and smooth with one hell of a story that will break your heart .

If you enjoy reading about people that rise from terrible situations you will love this book. What this woman lived through and turned out so well is amazing. The only more amazing thing is the wonderful, UNDERSTANDING MAN SHE MARRIED. A very well written heart felt book.

As I read this book it became clear to me that this kind of thing happens in real life but it doesn't make it right. And two the author thank you for sharing part of your life with us. As I turned the pages of this book I felt your sorrow. I was happy to read that your husband was good to you, you sure deserve it! May your life be blessed with many grandchildren and may Sonia find it in her heart to include you in her life

I found most of the essays in this book mildly interesting. Unfortunately, the author does not have any academic or professional training in nutrition, and this lack of knowledge shows. For example, the author equates 'protein' with animal products and uses this as a convenient rationalization for a diet heavy in animal products, which undoubtedly brings her much pleasure but is unnecessary from a nutritional standpoint (it's better to think of amino acid composition rather than 'protein'). The book has a UK flavor (sorry, flavour), which is a tad amusing since many people believe that 'British foodie' is an oxymoron due to the notoriously unpalatable nature of British cuisine (just ask the French!) The author is careful to avoid making sweeping generalizations regarding the desirability of food processing in all of its many forms, which is a good thing.

This book is positively addictive reading, even if a bit of it was awful news about food.What is processed food? Basically, it's almost everything you eat unless you are growing it or slaughtering it yourself. The origins of processed food lie in trying to safely preserve or store food. Going back to ancient techniques like smoking, salting, drying, and ice houses, Temple takes us forward to Kraft cheese and cheese in a can, all the way to the present day, filled with little mini-carrots and ready/frozen dinners. The big question and the point of Nicola Temple's book is *how* food was processed and whether the producer is transparent about the processing. From produce to cheese to bread to protein, to the deleterious effects of sugar, which is added to so many things. Temple closes out the book with a discussion of nanotechnology (a topic near and dear to my heart) and some of the caveats, and the future of processed food. I was quite fascinated and repelled by the chapter on cheese. And delighted with the literate discussion of celiac disease in the bread chapter.Temple's discussion of the convenience conundrum, which drives the production and consumption of processed food, is worth the price of admission. Our modern lifestyle has affected our perceptions and expectations of food. (I'm mindful of that report last year which said that many children thought chocolate milk came from brown cows and didn't know pickles were actually cucumbers.) The actual nutritional content of many of these convenient processed items is of concern. This book was written with a British slant but she also reports on information for Canadian and American readers. America's love affair with salt and sugar have taken firm hold in the UK. Other things to consider in "ready meals" include the caliber of the ingredients (bound to be the cheapest) and the fact that many micronutrients may be lost due to overcooking. Then there are the additives (things like carrageenan and gums) and preservatives (thinks like polyphosphates). Temple does provide a thoughtful discussion on the various forms of processing, including flash freezing, and why some frozen produce might be better than fresh bought produce artificially ripened with ethylene. (Less waste due to spoilage and froze at the peak of ripeness.)This book is fascinating enough to make me go and read Temple's previous outing, Sorting the Beef from the Bull: The Science of Food and Fraud Forensics, which sounds like a scary read.I received a Digital Review Copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

When I hear "processed food" I think of Velveeta or Doritos or frozen entrees. But this book is actually about a much more general concept, namely all the different ways foods have been (and are) processed and handled, going back to the stone age and looking forward to the future. Even frying an egg counts as food processing, or wrapping a green pepper (in a surprisingly high-tech material). Certain processes are especially interesting and get a good deal of attention, such as baking and cheesemaking, and the path that fruits and vegetables travel from farm to stomach. The book is full of fascinating tidbits of information, such as the surprising differences between the way that breads and cheeses are treated in Britain, France, and the US. And there are many surprises, such as the comparisons between the amount of ecological expense involved in various products, such as "baby" carrots (not actually young ones!) which I had always avoided on the grounds that they were wasteful, but which actually reduce product waste. My only complaint about the book is that many of the chemical activities that occur during processing aren't explained as clearly as they might have been for the general reader: I sometimes came away from a page shaking my head in puzzlement. Oh, and be aware that this is a British book, and food terms seem to be one of the areas that most strongly separate British and American English. We hear a lot about "mince" (apparently this means hamburger, not the content of mince pie), rockets, punnets, and aubergines, to mention just a few of the many British terms. A glossary might have been useful. There's a lot of good reading here, but prepare to be occasinally puzzled.

Best Before: The Evolution and Future of Processed Food was one of those books I wanted to love, but instead found to be slow, sometimes interesting, but overall a unengaging and textbook like read. The book is riddled with flaws, ranging from uninteresting and long winded explanations of food processing, author opinion as opposed to fact, and a lot of flip flopping from the author's perspective - even after finally finishing the book, I'm not quite sure where the author stands on processed food. The book was particularly difficult to read because the author's style constantly jumped from personal story, to really long history lesson, to incredibly indepth science explanation to analytical debate with herself complete with percentages and weights and etc. As much as I tried to read this book, I found myself putting down more often than not. Overall, while there are some interesting facts and stories in this book, it simply wasn't enjoyable enough to read again nor recommend.

I highly recommend this book, along with Robert Spitzer's "Healing the Culture: A Commonsense Philosophy of Happiness, Freedom, and the Life Issues," for philosophical arguments against abortion. These are mostly philosophical, legal, and Constitutional arguments rather than religious and biblical ones.This, along with Robert Spitzer's book, is a great resource for those who are looking for secular arguments against abortion.

Kreeft believes that ideas really are powerful things and he certainly proves it in this book. By using logic and with a firm grasp on language Kreeft molds an argument stronger than most others against abortion. In fact, he is still waiting for someone to refute his "apple" argument.If you want to find the logical basis of opposition to abortion, then you will find none better than within these pages. Kreeft is a masterful apologist and proves without a doubt that abortion is the greatest evil mankind has ever thrust upon itself...so far.

This is not the first book the well-known and prolific American philosopher has written on the subject of abortion. In 1983 he wrote The Unaborted Socrates: A Dramatic Debate on the Issues Surrounding Abortion (Inter-varsity Press). Indeed, abortion featured partially in other works, such as A Refutation of Moral Relativism: Interviews With an Absolutist (Ignatius Press, 1999).But as Kreeft says, abortion continues to be "the most divisive public issue of our time". Thus another look at the subject is in order.This volume, as the title indicates, is divided into three main sections. The first offers a philosophical argument against abortion. The second affirms pro-lifers as to why the debate is important and why they must continue in the battle. The third deals with objections from the pro-abortion side.Part one of this book makes the philosophical case against abortion. Philosophical argumentation can be quite technical and convoluted, involving multiple steps, seeking the validity of an argument or the soundness of a premise. And Kreeft is a philosopher. But most people are not. Thus it is the task of Kreeft to take relatively complex concepts in logic and philosophy and make them understandable to the common reader. This he does quite well.Generally any philosophical argument takes some amount of time to elaborate. Kreeft's 15 points take some 30 pages to unfold. But the are easy to understand and flow easily one to the other. Professional philosophers may demure, saying the argument is too simplistic, makes too many assumptions, or is not carefully nuanced enough. Possibly, yes. But Kreeft does seek to cover all the bases, and he deliberately has chosen not to go down the technical path.The fifteen steps perhaps can be boiled down to several propositions:-human rights are based on the condition of human reality (the nature of who we are)-morality is based on higher law, or metaphysics-metaphysics, not might, should determine morality-morality (rights) should extend to all persons, not just some-if we are unsure if the unborn are persons, then we should not abort themIf that does not seem like much of an argument, read the 30 pages and see how he carefully weaves his case together.Part two of the book is meant to rally the troops to not give up on this vital issue. It makes clear why the debate is so important, and how it in many ways impacts of so many other crucial issues. Many areas, such as family, society, sexuality, human meaning and purpose, and even human survival, are impacted by the way we think about, and legislate on, abortion. If we give up on defending the rights of the unborn, we have given way a huge amount of moral ground. To surrender here opens up all kinds of other abuses of human rights.Part three of the book takes on many of the common objections raised by the pro-abortion camp. It comes in the form of a dialogue between Kreeft and an opponent, a format Kreeft has successfully used in many of his earlier books. Engaging, witty and intellectually cogent, the argument made provides much useful information to the pro-life side.The overall effect of these three sections is a strongly and tightly argued case for the protection of unborn life, and a refutation of many of the pro-abortion positions. While the book is written for people in both camps, one assumes it will mainly be read by like-minded thinkers. However, those on the other side who want to approach the issue with an open mind will find much to think about here, and perhaps even a few may find themselves changing their minds.

If there were a Peter Kreeft fan club, I'd be the president. Kreeft, a Catholic professor of philosophy at Boston College, has a brilliant command of logic. And he makes it accessible to the average reader."Three Approaches to Abortion" is divided into three parts. The first is Kreeft's main argument, his "Apple Argument Against Abortion" which argues in 15 steps from the premise that "we know what an apple is" to the conclusion that "abortion must be outlawed." The second section is an essay by Kreeft describing 15 motivations behind the pro-life movement. The third section is a delightful (imaginary) dialogue between a pro-lifer and a pro-choicer. In it, Kreeft refutes the 15 most common pro-choice arguments.There is no doubt that "Three Approaches to Abortion" is a great read and a welcome contribution to the pro-life cause. Kreeft portrays the book as "thoughtful and compassionate" and says right in the preface that the book is meant to be read by pro-choicers.I found in this book an abundance of thoughtfulness but, unfortunately, a lack of compassion. He makes great points throughout the book -- inspiring many "Eureka!" moments in me -- but I think he lets his moral disgust with abortion get the best of him.Particularly in section 2 (which he admittedly calls a "pro-life motivational map") as well as in a brief "historical postscript" to section 1, Kreeft's logical arguments give way to polemical attacks against the "culture of death." Which I totally agree with! My only problem is that they'd probably serve to offend any pro-choicers and confuse any atheists who may read the book.It's unfortunate, because Kreeft is a great, great writer and philosopher. If you're pro-life, don't miss "Three Approaches to Abortion"! If you're pro-choice, buy the book and skip section 2.

I can't give a stronger recommendation. I saw pre-publish outline for this book authored by a former Boston Globe writer and decided to wait two weeks for the release. The book is a combination auto-biography and documentary of the DFS industry. The book is well structured with early engagement on DFS players such as MaxDalury and Condia who made their profits from the author and I. The author decided to take a sabbatical and embed himself to become a winning DFS player. Read the book to learn his result!The book is a wealth of information unlike other DFS references I have seen. Personally, I have read/reviewed more than 30 thoroughbred horse handicapping books. A book written by a professional writer (this book) adds a lot to transferring knowledge to the reader. I waited two weeks from the decision to purchase a book on DFS to receive this book. I spent an enthralling vacation week reading this book and was pleased with my decision to wait. I learned the user (sometimes real) names from the players of the DFS industry such as MaxDalury, Condia, beepinamjeep and 000_oreo_000. I have been unwittingly playing these players and now I understand their core strategies. The author explains why DFS is a game of skill, takes us through the legislative and relationships back to online poker, core issues with DFS and his own voyage from DFS fish to shark.Depending on what you are looking for with respect to DFS, I am confident you will find it here.

I, like many have gotten swept up in the daily fantasy sports world. It's been both fun and frustrating. After a bad weekend of losing I decided it was time to take a break, so naturally what should I do while not playing DFS? Well, read about it, right? Searching for the latest "how to" book, I came across this book instead and I'm so happy I did. Not only was it an enjoyable read, but his story really helped me put into perspective just how close I was coming to having a problem with becoming consumed with DFS, and with a new found inside look into the industry, I feel like I know how I can remain a recreational player and have fun. Important to note, this is MY takeaway, yours may be different. This is not a how to, I'm just the kind of person that draws information from good story telling. The best part, for me anyways, there's a great connection to my beloved hometown hockey club at the end. I won't give away the spoilers. Highly recommended!

Barbarisi does an excellent job of weaving together multiple perspectives to give a 360 view of the world of daily fantasy sports. Through Dan the DFS player, the read explores firsthand what it is like enter this new world and ponders the relationship between fish and sharks in the games. Through Dan the reporter, the reader learns the intricacies of the DFS business, the legal issues, and the political strategies of the companies. The friendships Dan formed with professional DFS players add nicely to both these perspectives, and Dan's profiles of these individuals are well written and colorful. As a poker and sports enthusiast, I've read a lot of gambling and big sports data stories--this book is unique!

This was one of the most entertaining books I've ever read. It is highly recommended for DFS players and sports fans alike. Much like "Alligator Blood" for the poker world, this book gives you a great 'behind the scenes' look at the DFS industry and it's journey for regulation. Additionally, Daniel shares his story of being mentored by one of the best DFS players in the world. It is fun to understand his process and watch his journey in the DFS landscape. I found myself actually 'sweating' the Live Final with him!

I've dabbled in Daily Fantasy Sports, but I've always been content to be one of the "fish", occasionally winning but mostly losing money for fun. Daniel Barbarisi aimed higher, and watch what he achieves! This really reads like a sports book, as the ambitious upstart climbs the ladder and we get lots of interesting details about the industry, the players, the leaders of the companies and the scandals and other roadblocks along the way.

I really should have read this book right when it came out, because Dan Barbarisi is a friend. I guess I did the next best thing, by reading it cover to cover in less than a week. I didn’t plan it that way, but Dan did such a great job telling the story that I couldn’t put it down. I’ve never had an interest in fantasy sports, and I’ve never been tempted to play DFS, but I loved reading about the business and the people in it, and especially about Dan’s own journey. Outstanding.

I am not a gambler or a DFS player. Nevertheless, I found this an interesting account of how the industry developed and imploded only to salvage itself from total obliteration. The player's names were a hoot ("BeepImaJeep" as one example). The book is factually interesting and mildly entertaining. One conclusion is that anyone challenging the guys who play for a living have more money than brains.
