OK - I have read a few books, and this book has it all laid out - there are no guides for outlining and structuring - there are no comments about 3 act vs 4 act or sequences - this is about the writing of Fantasy and Science Fiction - they are going with the tools that you already know the basics of writing - interestingly enough, there were a few sections within this book, that had I read it 2 weeks ago, I would have saved myself a few hours of needless world building - one of my favorite sections in the book is when it has a sample paragraph and it illustrates how changes to the world affect the story - it starts with a basic fiction version, and evolves into a more extreme fantasy version - YMMV on your opinion of the changes, but it showed me how I was working too hard at making my world too different and how uncomfortable it would be to read, when Elf and Dwarf were renamed, and Height and Weight had a new system - it is the kind of book that I wish that I had read before I made my failed attempts all those times before - I have world builders disease to be sure, but now that I have seen what happens when you let your building run away with you, I feel that I will be able to start and finish a much better and believable piece of work -My only negative thing is that I felt the book did not provide enough examples, but what was included was very well illustrated - this will not show you how to turn your idea into a book without work on your part, but it does show good examples of what to do and what not to do, and a starting point is all that you can get for Fantasy and Science fiction, as everyone's ending point can be miles away from everyone else's examples.
This is the best comprehensive guide to writing sci fi and fantasy I've seen out there. What makes it so good is that the explanations and hints aren't full of fluff, and they give great examples and comparisons, allowing the guide to be condensed to a manageable size. It is easy to reference the sections you want. It covers everything from plot, characters, world-building, to publishing. Really, it covers it all. I was so impressed I bought a copy for a friend of mine in a workshop I attend. If only it did spell check and grammar checks on my writing I'd be set.
I've read a lot of these "how to write" genre books. This one is hands down my favorite.It's great for those reading their first how-to book on writing fantasy and science fiction. In the clearest language and using good examples, Athans makes plain what young writers need to look out for when crafting such stories. He identifies which barriers can be broken and which should be obeyed.Keep in mind, however, this is NOT a nuts and bolts approach to writing or submitting. It's more of an overview with general guidelines. Appropriate mostly for those just getting into the craft.
Overall a decent read... I ate it up in a couple of days. There are certainly some solid pieces of advise on a variety of things, and the author has a good sense of humour (I guess you'd have to trying to make a living in this genre).It does in my opinion weigh a bit more to the Fantasy side of things, than the Sci-fi side, but that didn't bother me personally.What I didn't like is that it's fairly vague on some major issues. The section on publishing was very high-level, what one would expect in a "Publishing for Dummies" book. The guy is (was) an insider, so I wanted a few more juicy tidbits and secrets. He only hinted at some brutal realities in the industry, so I wonder if the editor held him back there. Regardless, I started reading his blog, which is a bit more bold and answers more questions.A solid 4 stars.
As a newbie writer this was a great guide to starting out in the fantasy/sci-fi genre. The basic concepts are explained well and should be useful for any future writing I have planned. I read this book in tandem with the excellent Self-Editing for Fiction Writers. Great stuff.
Much of the challenge of doing something new is figuring out what you don't know. Athans explains what kinds of questions you need to answer for your book in all stages, from developing the first idea to submitting for publication. This book is about the big picture, not details. That said, it's a very worthwhile resource. Because of this book, you'll know which direction to go and what questions to ask, and that is well worth the asking price.
