3.5 ⭐️s. I always look forward to new Best American compilations, especially the essays. This year for my reading challenge instead of primarily reading novels, memoirs, or nonfiction books I’m trying to change it up and read more short story collections, Best American anthologies, etc. As with all books of short works, I rarely like them all. In this particular compilation I loved nine out of the 24 essays. So I’m giving it 3.5 stars because of the quality of the nine essays that I thoroughly enjoyed. I never expect to like them all so if I really enjoy just a few I give the book a stronger rating whereas with fiction or memoirs I rate them by the overall work.My favorite essay, if not one of the best essays I’ve read from a Best American was Kathryn Schultz’s “Losing Streak.” The contributors notes state that she will be turning this essay into a book about loss overall called “Lost & Found” and I eagerly await that. It will be an “exploration of disappearance, discovery, grief, and love.”

I'm a huge fan of the Best American Essays series, which I have bought every year since its very beginning. Unfortunately, though, its quality does vary some according to the particular slant of the guest editor. I have grown weary, in recent years, of the tendency to pick guest editors, such as Hilton Als, whose stance is painfully political. Please, Robert Atwan, pick new year's editor for their ability to choose beautifully written, aesthetically oriented, essays... not these hamhanded political people.

Nice variety of topics from philosophy to the insidious nature of racism to relationships with parents. There is something for everyone, featuring renowned authors.

We have a 7 year old granddaughter interested in all things regarding the human body. This book was able to answer some questions that she had on the bones in the body and what they are called and where they are located.

Love this book! I used this book as a read aloud for a library program theme about our bodies. The K2 participants loved the book and put together a life size skeleton after reading the book.

When my 3 year old fell down today and say "Mama...see, I didn't fall apart because I have bones..." I realized he has learned a lot from this book! I think though it may be geared toward children in the 4 plus age, you can ad lib however you want so that they learn but don't get too lost with technicalities of bone marrow, etc...which can be explained in more detail later. Anyhow, definitely recommend.

I bought this book for my nephew. He loves it! It gives enough information that the child learns new things but not so much that he can't understand. He's four and he's asking lots of questions. We've actually purchased a number of books from the "Let's read and find out Science 2" series and they all provide lots of information. His mom says that she even learns new things from them.A great value and an asset to any child's library.

I had this book growing up, and I still remember my 4th grade teacher being shocked that I knew how many bones were in the body. My 6 year old loves this book, too.

I bought this book along with others from the "Let's Read and Find Out Science" series.I find this particular book to be very helpful in explaining to my 5 year old son how our bodies work. It goes into just enough detail to satisfy his curious mind. The drawings are cute and help him follow along when hearing new words for the first time (like ligaments, etc).I love all the books from this series. I find them to be just the perfect length to give a little science lesson, but not too long that my son loses interest.

There are a lot of these little books and they all are very well done. Our kids love the idea of getting to know about SCIENCE. The 7th grade teachers I work with even use it with their kids in Science class. This looked like it had been a bestseller so I thought I'd try it. Although it was easy enough to read and had no bad grammar or typos, the style is very "flat" and reads more like stage directions than a novel. The author does more "telling" than "showing" if you know what that means. None of the characters are likeable or sympathetic, so the only suspense is to find out "who done it" -- and, again, I didn't care much, beyond mild curiosity. Also, there seemed to be a loose plot thread at the end, that was never explained. A key piece of evidence just seems to go away and the police ignore an obvious witness/suspect. There is also a final twist that the author must have thought would be shocking, but it seems like she had no other idea for how to end the story. If you want a quick read without deep emotional depth or artistic style, you might like it.

Marco and Anne are invited to a dinner party at the home of their next door neighbors Cynthia and Graham. They get a baby sitter for their baby daughter Cora. The sitter on the day of the dinner party cancels at the last minute. Anne really did not want to go to the party so she tell Marco that she will stay home with baby Cora. Marco somehow convinces her that they can both still go to the dinner party. All they have to do is every half hour one of them will go home and check on Cora, and they will also take the baby monitor.They stay later than Anne wanted to and when she goes to check on baby Cora the crib is empty. The police immediately suspect that one or both of them are involved in the disappearance of Cora. As they investigated they soon discover that both of them have secrets that they are not telling each other. Each time that I thought that I had figure out who took baby Cora I was wrong. Every chapter of this book brought more twists and turns. That kept me on the edge of my seat and turning the page to find out what was going to happen next. The ending is not to be missed

There were many good things in this novel; it was suspenseful, fast-paced and slightly unpredicable at times. The story and plot kept me engaged.The writing was mediocre. I found myself becoming frustrated with the "third person" style narrative. When the narration is something the reader repeatedly thinks about, it's probably not a good thing. Narration is something that shouldn't be noticed, but the way this book was written, I noticed it a LOT.There was not one likeable character, not one. It's hard to get excited about a book when you really don't care what happens to the characters. As for the plot, it wasn't anything new - quite predicable.Once everything comes together, the story becomes a bit nonsensical. There is no way the dad would get off scot-free. There are also several characters introduced that never get developed (the husband of the neighbor is one) as well as side stories that never get resolved. There are several loose ends, and that drives me nuts.I've not read anything by this author previously, and I probably wouldn't read another of her books. With that said, the book was good enough to be worth the time.

I read a lot of books, and really have trouble finding fiction that isn't the same old detective murder stories. I thought this was a great story with a lot of twists that I didn't see coming. It would be hard to talk about the book without giving some of the plot away, but it kept me reading, and was truly hard to put down. I usually read from 11 pm until about 1 am, then go to bed. I ended up staying up until about 2 am or later each night trying to find out what was going to happen next. I thought the book was very well written and easy to read. As soon as I finished it, I found another Shari Lapena book to start.

I hate books like this: no redeeming characters, surprising twists that aren’t really surprising at all, and dull, unimaginative prose. This just isn’t a good book.

The writing style is painfully simplistic. Subject-verb-object. Subject-verb-object. It seems 9 out of 10 sentences begins with a name."Marco sits down. Marco is tired. Marco is trying to think. Anne gazes out the window. Anne is sad. Anne and Marco sit in silence."That's not actually from the book, but it might as well be. It's as if the author has no formal education beyond grade school.The plot is not original by any means. The characters are shallow because they are all described in short, simple sentences. "Anne came from money. Marco did not."I can't believe I paid $13 for this book. Not worth it.

To date I've read everything Robert Greene has in print and, much to my surprise, this turned out to be the most useful volume of all. Greene's other books were immensely helpful for clearing my head of cobwebs since, along with everyone else, I'm forced to negotiate our brave new world of cutthroat tactics and social Darwinists, while trying to keep a roof over my head. Without going into detail, let me simply say The 33 Strategies of War taught me exactly what I needed to know in order to adequately discourage the bullying I have had to endure at work for the past three years. Until I can find another job -- not all wars are winnable -- I can now keep this workplace vampire's demeaning behaviors in check. I recommend all of Greene's books, but this one may well be the best investment of the lot.

Great examples and stories, but as always Greene has a rather Machiavellian view of life which becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy--if we view life as war it more often will be. But on the other side, we need to realize that some people will screw us over, and a dose of that truth is needed for survival as well. My biggest revelation of the book was that war is less about war than the psychology and drama going on behind the scenes, whether it be tides literally affecting the course of a war or personal affairs changing the course of history.

There are no wars in most parts of the world. Condemning war as barbaric deeds is politically correct and very HYPOCRITICAL. The non-physical war in peaceful places is even more aggressive and nasty in fact. This book is truly enlightening in explaining the truth of it. But most importantly. This book is amazingly PRACTICAL and ACTIONABLE. I can't praise more about this book. 48 laws of power open your eyes for truth of human dynamics, this book comes far from understanding the humanity into the manual of getting what you want by humanity. Thank you, Robert Greene. I still think not only Robert Greene but this book are underestimated in the world. Although Greene is famous in the States, but it's truly not enough.

This is probably the best book I've read - the writing is very engaging and they are explained in such an interesting and insightful way. Clearly a lot of research has gone into this, particularly the historic stories about war/combat and politics. The examples from history are an excellent way to illustrate specific points. I regularly keep this book for reference, and I'm sure I'll continue referring to it in the future. It uses the topic of war to explain and describe different strategic tools and methods. I've read 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene, so this is my 2nd book I've read by him - and it exceeded expectations.

I enjoyed this book. Its not without faults, and the author gets a little whimsy/meta when describing some of the concepts it entails. However this book gave me an interest in history i never knew i had. Overall i am exceedingly happy i read this.

Robert Greene continues to blow me away! After reading “The 48 Laws of Power” I was hooked. The writing style and format (for me) is my favorite “extra bonus” in his books. Great content, examples, and a knack for explaining fairly complicated ideas in a way that “clicks.”Read it!

This is the best of his books. I have given over 20 copies of this book to young officers, enlisted men, young business people...even both of my children. Well written and the most impressive thing is how he uses the same things we have always read from these scions of leadership but he translates this into understandable...and better yet...actionable ideas. If you want to be a leader...of any kind...at any age...buy this book.
