Vicki has done a wonderful job in writing this book in at least two ways. My mother was an English teacher but bless her heart, i could not grasp a thing she tried teaching me about pronouns, participles and paraphrases. I tried two different college courses in English Comp and failed both. Many years later just when the student is ready, wa-lah....Vicks' book shows up and wow...did things start to click and make all kinds of sense! It is amazing how she was able to boil all those 'ugly' little rules that helps us talk down into an easy to read format, focused directly towards the creative mind. So, not only was she able to demystify the English language, but she was able to do it with clarity for those of us that have always had trouble grasping the finer points of writing. And amazing as all that seems (to me at least), the way she helps the artist gain an understanding of their own work is a gift! After completing the exercises, i believe i will not only have the ability to write about my work so that others may understand it, but i will be able to communicate better and sound more intelligent in other areas of my life as well.Thank you Vicki

I got this book because I wanted to be able to market my creations better. I need to write blurbs about my creations for applications for juried shows and also for my online presence. What the author did for me what actually to help me focus my thinking about what I actually do, which was something I hadn't thought about. By focusing my thought, I'm actually focusing my end product, and I feel like I'm heading in a direction finally. The author gives clear step-by-step instructions on how to write about your art, plus prompts and ideas to help you get the words going. There were plenty of types of writings that seems irrelevant to what I need at this time, but what I got out of this book is so much more useful than any other type of marketing book I've read thus far. It's practical in a way that many authors just never get around to fulfilling.

I didn't find it useful. It has a lot of questions about your work and your answers will give you what you need to write a statement. I was hoping for something more specific. However, I will go back and answer some of the questions and see if that helps. If it does, I will comeback and change the rating to a higher one.

Thank you very much for your wonderful book,Vicki! It truly is a helpful book. I would highly recommend it to my friends who are artists and I'm sure they would find it extremely useful for all their writing and presentations. English is my second languge and it was easy for me to read and understand; it is very well written. I love your book'', Vicki!

I meet a lot of artists. I manage the website for a gallery. One of my responsibilities is putting artist information on the website. (www.aavart.com). The information I request is basic biography and artist statement. In 98% of the cases, artists are not sure what to write. On a going forward basis, I will be recommending this book.

Excellent informative book. I highly recommend it.

A very helpful guide for anyone who has to write about one'self. Good advice on how to start, how to be prepared for any occasion.

No matter what type of artist you are, you need this book!I bought this in both the paperback AND the e version, that's how much I love this book!Vicki will walk you through the process of writing Artist Statements, bios, resumes, and so much more.Buy it now. You won't be sorry!

I'll be honest. I almost gave up reading at some point. It was way too long 😴. Alot of repeat chapters, I had to skim. I didn't understand why she waited and waited for a him, it was tiresome to read. Blue is like that high school loser boyfriend you once had, is terrible to you and for you yet you keep going back for more heart ache. I didn't understand until I read about his mental illness. Just heartbreaking. The one thing that bothered me was the fact that she chose to have another baby knowing his history. Not one of my faves from this author and I love all her books.

No Tomorrow was heartbreakingly beautiful. Ms. Cole drew me in from the beginning of this book and didn’t let me go until it was finished. In the moments I was forced to put it down to tend to life I couldn’t stop thinking about Piper and Blue (Evan). Their story was full of pain, angst, and undying love and spoke to my soul in a way few books are able. I felt like this was an important story to tell for so many reasons and is definitely one of the best books I’ve read this year.At the heart of it No Tomorrow is a sweeping love story, but in reality, it is so much more than that. It’s a tale of hurt and healing, of loyalty and loss, of freedom and forever; No Tomorrow traversed the deep waters of anguish and joy with equal grace, and I was enamored with the extent of emotion this book drug me through. My heart both wept with tears of happiness for the kind of love Piper and Evan shared and was shattered by the torture they had to endure because of that love.Mental illness is an issue that is very near and dear to my heart. I love it when I read a book that treats it with respect and brings awareness to what living with it is like, rather than using it as a crutch to make a character quirky. Carian Cole did a phenomenal job of portraying what the life of someone suffering from mental illness is like and how it affects everyone around them. I am absolutely in awe of how wonderful this book was, and I know I’ll be thinking about No Tomorrow for some time.No Tomorrow was gritty and angsty; it dealt with some of the hardest subject matter there is, but never once did any of those things feel like they were used gratuitously. Each time the book delved into mental illness, drug use, or profound depression it was moving the story forward, giving the reader clarity to what loving someone who suffers from those afflictions can be like. It was often gut-wrenching, but I loved that Piper dealt with Evan and his demons with dignity and never let the bad come between them. While I own several Carian Cole books, No Tomorrow is the first of her works that I’ve read, and I was completely blown away. The writing was fabulous, the story astonishing in its beauty and depth, and the characters amongst some of the most well-developed I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know in romance. This story, this author, this writing will be the standard by which similar books are measured, for me, for a very long time.

*** Releasing Sept 13th ***5 stars isn't enough for this story but it'll have to do!I can't say too much about this book for a couple of reasons, but I can say it's one of my ALL TIME top reads! To say it simply (and this book is anything but simple!), most books I read to escape, but this book I read and continue to reread to EXPERIENCE. To learn. To just be a better person all the way around. It's been a very long time since I've come across the type of read that crawls inside my soul, makes me ache, and I loved it! It's not even a love, I needed this book in my life and wasn't aware of that fact (or how much) until I found myself sucked in. I'm betting that there's no way I'm gonna end up alone in feeling this way.I'll always be the first to admit that I love me some rainbows and sunshine reads so I'm usually allergic to anything angsty, but I think what did it for me in No Tomorrow was the author's special care in the way she told the story of two special souls and the journey they found themselves on.Genuine. Very raw, at times ugly, and real. I can't tell you how many times I bawled my eyes out, but GENUINE.I wish I could say so much more but I think it's best for everyone to go in just as blind as I was and just, FEEL.Well done 💙ðŸΕΎ

Holy, holy, holy cow. Carian Cole has written an absolutely gorgeous, beautiful, heartbreaking, seriously deep story of love, mental illness and the resilience of faith. As I was reading, I thought, I can almost see where this story will go and although it might have gotten there, Carian's words are EVERYTHING. She writes this story as though she is writing a poem where EVERY SINGLE WORD has meaning. The character development of not only Blue and Piper, but of all the people who crossed their paths was so amazingly deep, you felt like these are people you actually know...and in a way, you just might. Having had people in my life suffer from long time mental illnesses, I have been through that wringer more than once or twice before and Carian really brought all those feelings of pain, regret and fear to light...But the biggest thing this story brought to me was HOPE. No matter what was going on, Piper never lost hope no matter how many times she was broken, or how many years went by, or how many people told her to give it up. She stood strong and powered through with the faith that they would find their happy ending. "I love you like there is no tomorrow". These two loved like there was no tomorrow and only in reading about their journey will you know whether or not they got the ending they both so richly deserved! My heart is still beating a mile a minute even hours after reading this because it was so beautifully emotional.

I had to return the first set of volumes immediately, as the binding of the larger book was already broken and the corner of the cover damaged as well. The second set I received was in fine condition. However, now, 6 months later, the binding of the second volume is once again broken. They were smart to break this into more than 1 volume, but it should have been 3 volumes instead of 2. The second volume is clearly too large for the binding to last, especially with heavy use through a 3 year residency. Looks like I'll be gluing it back together for the next 2.5 years!

Perfect!

Ordered this for my son who is a veterinary opthalmology resident. He will use this to study for his boards at the end of his residency.

the cover of my book fell off the day I got the book. This thing is not going to last me 4 days let along till boards :(

Amazing and comprehensive book for veterinarians. An absolutely essential book for veterinary ophthalmologists. My 2 sets of hard back books have been holding up very well and were purchased just after publication. Kindle version is great for searching quickly.

Review

"There is much to learn (and unlearn) about Amish life; this book is the best place to start." (Pennsylvania Heritage)"If you only read one book on the Amish, read this one. With engaging prose, Nolt answers our questions and explains how this horse-and-buggy community thrives in our hypermodern world. This is the gold-medal overview of America’s largest plain community. A great antidote to the fictitious fluff of 'reality' TV shows." (Donald B. Kraybill, Elizabethtown College, coauthor of The Amish)"I am not aware of any other books that are as accessible, informed by scholarship, brief, and engaging as this one. A significant and nuanced contribution." (Susan Trollinger, University of Dayton, author of Selling the Amish: The Tourism of Nostalgia)"The Amish: A Concise Introduction is a highly useful book that presents the culture in a concise, easy to understand and package." I enjoyed this book a great deal. It was good to read about the Amish in a manner that wasn't sensationalized or belittling of the Amish. I will be looking forward to reading more books in this series, especially if they are as affordable as this one.

A recent trip to an Amish community piqued my interest and this book was just enough to satisfy. I appreciate the author’s economy of verbiage.

A very accurate and informative publication concerning the Amish's attitudes and their way of life. The author doesn't wonder back and forth in his writings but stays on track and delivers straight to the point. The book also contains some interesting photos.

excellent writer and book content

The Amish: A Concise Introduction by Steven Nolt may be the first non-fiction book about the Amish that I have read in its entirety. (That comes after twenty years or so of reading hundreds of Amish fiction books and bits and pieces of related non-fiction books and online articles.)I found The Amish to be extremely engaging and informative. Although I would call it scholarly in the sense of presenting much factual information, the tone is very comfortable and easy to read; an academic background is not necessary for understanding. "Concise" is a good description; at less than 150 pages, not a great deal of time is required to read the entire book.Nolt fits his facts into a framework that helps his readers begin to understand these often misunderstood people and how they function in a society much different from many of their own beliefs and practices. He debunks the image of the Amish as a group of people stuck somewhere in decades long past, out of touch with the modern world, and shows how they have used insight and innovation to grow and thrive into the twenty-first century while holding to long-standing principles.Anyone with an interest in learning more about the background and lifestyle of the Amish should find this book a valuable read.

This is an excellent introduction. It's short, extremely well-written and delivers the "concise" intro promised in the title. Nolt writes with wit, objectivity and deep knowledge of the Amish lifestyle. The Amish are often conflated with other groups such as the Mennonites and Hutterites; a handy appendix describes differences among them. The book considers the Old Order Amish, which may be the most important group, with a current population of about 300,000. Noll notes that the population has been doubling every 18 to 20 years, so the 50,000 Amish in 1970 became 180,000 by 2000 and 300,000 by 2015, with the typical family having 7 children. The details are fascinating. Every Amish family is bilingual in a German dialect and in English (for reading and writing). There is no church but rather a church community with services rotated among the 12 to 18 or so families in a group. Schooling is through 8th grade, with teachers also having schooling through 8th grade. There are chapters on Amish roots (chapter 2, extremely helpful), family and schooling, the Amish and their neighbors, and the image of the Amish (which appears to be wrong and a sort of romantic one of simplicity and virtue). One chapter is on "rumspringa," the period after Amish youth are considered adult (age 16) and before they are baptized, but this seems to be commonly misinterpreted as a try-anything period. Nolt says these youth mostly live at home, and work essentially full-time and their adventures as reported on "reality" tv are inaccurate. There's also a chapter on work; a minority live off their farms and income from it, with many working outside the community and often for Amish companies, usually quite small. This is of important for the future because if the Amish population does double to 600,000 by the 2030s and to a million plus by the 2050s, there will be stresses in opening new communities and finding farmland. Amish seem to mostly fit well in the overall communities but the larger the Amish communities the more stress seems likely in the future. Right now the centers of Amish populations are Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana. The book offers lots of information. I had been unaware that the name stems from one Jakob Ammann, or that the faith began in Switzerland and Alsace. The French expelled Anabaptists in 1712 (hence from Alsace). There was some migration to America in the 1700s but apparently small (Nolt says 500 people in Lancaster County PA in the 1770s, with another wave of about 3,000 in the early to middle 1800s). The movement died out in Europe, the residual groups joining other Protestant groups. So the Amish, whatever their origins, are now an American (and a bit of a Canadian) phenomenon. There's a good bit on the Amish relationship to the modern world. Yes they use horse and buggy, but also often pay neighbors for transport. They have a body of medical knowledge but do not rule out contemporary medicine. There's also a difference between use and ownership; an Amish man might use a riding mower at work that he would never think of using at home. There seems to be an ongoing Amish adaptation of technology in the sense of determining if it would be useful to the way of life, and if so, figuring out how to make it conform to Amish-acceptable technology (in such things as energy use). Also of note: the general assumption that Amish farming products are by definition organic turns out not to be the case. There are two short and useful appendices. There are also a few appropriate photos and tables.

David McCraw has worked at the New York Times (NYT) since 2002. With a background in journalism, he's also a lawyer employed as Deputy General Counsel of the New York Times.McCraw recalls lawsuits faced by the NYT since his employment, but the focus is on the last two years under the Trump administration. This book is not to slam Trump. McCraw is a self-described "raving Moderate." He slams Democrats as well. He describes Hillary Clinton as someone who "had hostility to openness" (89) and Barack Obama's administration as one that was "more aggressive than any prior administration in prosecuting government workers accused of unauthorized disclosures" (111), perhaps because of the 2013 Edward Snowden scandal. What McCraw does describe are the many threatened lawsuits from Trump since his presidency, almost all of them accusing the NYT of libel when it's nothing more than Trump not liking the criticisms in the articles. Libel must be proven as made in malice and be untrue facts, not opinions. What Trump doesn't like about him in the media, he immediately labels as "fake news." McCraw claims the NYT may make mistakes in its reporting, and then publish an apology, but it will not intentionally publish false stories and disinformation.McCraw writes well and I find the narrative flows easily. Perhaps McCraw wrote this book (which, I'm sure, Trump will not like and sue him for libel, again) to justify why the NYT does not write positively of Trump. Compared to Bush43 and Obama before him, no other 21st century American president has disparaged the press as much s Trump has, and often because he doesn't like anything bad or negative published about him. He cites too many incidents in this book, including the repeated tactic of using secret service employees to force certain journalists out of press briefings, and Trump rallying his supporters to attack reporters as enemy of the people. The Trump administrations thrives on secrecy, and the more the government withholds, the more journalists and the public will want to pry out the truth to the public.McCraw's exacerbated tone is evident in Chapter 6, "Us vs Us" and continues in subsequent chapters as the proliferation of fakes news is making its way around social media and people don't always know that the stories they are reading are fake. His exacerbation often turns to dry sarcasm, and he cites Facebook's lax search for the truth as part of the problem. The book is timely, as Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has recently mentioned reconsidering the 1964 Supreme Court NYT vs Sullivan decision, in which a defendant must prove malice when suing for defamation. If this decision is overturned, Trump and his administration could sue more easily and win. This is something to ponder.

Considering that McCraw became known to most of us after writing a "lawyer letter" to Trump's attorneys that went viral, it's tempting to chalk this up as another anti-Trump screed that can be easily ignored by his supporters and trumpeted (if not read) by his detractors. That would be a mistake. What McCraw has written instead is an informative, enlightening, nuanced, and entertaining description of the role of the First Amendment in our government and culture. As an attorney, McCraw recognizes the difference between legal writing and narrative writing, and he pokes fun at himself and the legal profession in making this point while ensuring that his narrative is clear, direct, and easy to read. His focus is on telling stories that highlight his points, and given his work with the NYT there are lots of stories to share. He reviews not only many of the challenges with Trump's attacks on the press, but also the role and importance of "leakers," his frustration with Obama's crackdown on these leakers (in this sense, Obama comes across almost as poorly as Trump), the story behind the Harvey Weinstein reporting, kidnappings in foreign countries, challenges with the Freedom of Information Act, and more. Concepts that are likely dry and tedious in law school are brought to life in real-world situations where the First Amendment matters, sometimes to the point of literal life and death. At the book's heart, as McCraw affirms, is a passion for the First Amendment and the need for it to exist in a democracy. Throughout the book, the real heroes are the journalists who risk their lives in standing up to authoritarian governments and placing themselves in war zones to report their stories. These individuals demonstrate that the First Amendment is worth dying for.McCraw closes the book by noting that it's not enough to support the First Amendment, but that we must all search for the truth so we can make informed decisions. The founding fathers developed their constitutional system through the belief that it would succeed only if citizens could distinguish truth from lies. This is why Trump's attacks on "fake news" and calling the media "the enemy of the people" is particularly alarming. As McCraw states, "The First Amendment story is, in the end, now about law but about hearts and minds. It doesn't really matter how much freedom journalists have if no one believes them. A discredited press plays no role in shaping democracy and holding power accountable." This is a role the Founding Fathers recognized as imperative, and we should as well. McCraw shows us why.

Deputy general counsel of the New York Times writer David E. McCraw gives us a firsthand account of fighting for the free press and the First Amendment in the Age of Trumpism when DJT is at constant war with liberal democracy and the press-specifically The New York Times.McCraw warns we live in a time where a significant portion of the population has an appetite for a totalitarian joke monster: “Now we live in a time when the president demands that laws be changed to rein in First Amendment freedoms and denounces the press as the enemy of the people, a stain on society, traffickers in ‘fake news.’ The problem is not so much that he says all of that; the problem is how well it plays, delighting crowds that, in a frenzy, turn to jeer the assembled press-corps covering the event.”McCraw in this book has waged war against “alternative facts.” He wants to win the hearts and minds of the American people by waking up their passion for the First Amendment by showing the legal battles The New York Times has been fighting--and fighting still--against Trump and his henchmen. We must not, McCraw urges, become numb to the repetition of evil until it numbs us, becoming the “banality of evil,” a phrase McCraw borrows from Hannah Arendt throughout the book.In many ways, Truth in Our Times is a love letter to the First Amendment. McCraw argues persuasively that we should not take it for granted: “The First Amendment is not really dead but it will live long only if the American people fall in love with it again. It is no effortless romance. It requires hard work.”Indeed, McCraw and the good journalists of The New York Times should be applauded for doing the hard work to keep their love of the First Amendment alive.
