This is not the book for the serious practitioner. If you are looking for real wisdom you may find this book too simple and shallow. Some of the concepts used here like "the story of the Eagle and the Snake" are completely misleading due to perhaps lack of historical knowledge form the Author. The story of the Eagle and the serpent is a religious fabrication from Christianity. In Native American culture the Serpent was never seen as a negative symbol. The negativity of the snake symbol comes from the Bible, not from American shamans. For those who are looking into deeper understanding and higher knowledge, I strongly recommend "Shamanism As a Spiritual Practice for Daily Life" by Thomas Dale Cowan and Tom Cowan.

This book is very easy to read, it is interesting and educational on every page. I enjoyed learning about don Jose Ruizs hometown and the messages he brings from there. It is an interesting story of how the great city of the Aztecs, Tenochtitlan, started - which is where Mexico City is now. The shamans message from the fire to his people was "When the eagle of truth devours the snake of lies in the garden of your mind, then you will find a home within yourself- you will find your own personal freedom." The message from this book is the wisdom you seek is inside you. I look forward to sharing this book with my teenage boys, as well. Thank you don Jose Ruiz!

This book builds a bridge between the ancient teachings of the Toltec shamans and our modern world. Unlike many other books I’ve read in this category, the author manages to write in a clear, gentle voice while he conveys esoteric or symbolic information.I especially liked how he framed the teachings in the old stories of his ancestry. After each story, don Jose explained how the tale could be applied to my real life. His manner is straightforward and authentic without seeming preachy. As I sit with what he shared, I find many ways to see the world and myself through new eyes.I’m glad to see another book from the Ruiz family and hope that this author will continue sharing from his tradition.

This book is amazing. It is not a one time read book but a continual resource to remind you to live your true journey. Thank you Don Jose Ruiz for sharing this with us all!

Love this book! The knowledge you gain if you apply even some of the principles discussed is invaluable.

I really enjoyed reading this book and the teachings were simple yet very profound. I loved reading the stories and then being able to relate to the characters and the wisdom they provide. Overall this small book contributed in a great way to my personal journey and spiritual experience.

I bought the book wisdom of the shamans during the flash sale. I was thinking of adding that book to my Christmas list so my husband could get it for me. Once I saw the flash sale I bought it right away. I finished reading the entire book today. Coming from a Mexican background that book hit me in so many ways. It made me happy, it made me cry, it helped me open my eyes in the areas I am holding myself back in my life. Thank you for writing such an inspirational, & amazing book.

This author continues to so deeply speak to my soul. His words connect very simply and clearly, and bring the awakening energy to my entire being that I've been longing for. Profoundly transformational!!! Thank you!!!

Review

"A very lively retelling of seven traditional Irish stories accompanied by striking stylised artwork from Niamh Sharkey (winner of the Mother Goose Award) - --Bookseller

"In his cogent introduction, Doyle gives a succinct overview of the significance of storytelling in the Irish cultural tradition, linking it to the present by references to the government-sponsored systematic collection of tales in the mid-1930s.... The illustrations by Niamh Sharkey are two-dimensional abstractions, richly colored like illuminated manuscripts....[T]he book is a well-designed addition to folklore collections." --Horn Book

"This comic, tender collection of tales from the oral tradition will give adults as much pleasure to read aloud as it will give children to hear. Doyle has a lively prose style full of wonderfully idiomatic dialogue: one character, for instance, drinks so much he is left "as dumb as a haddock on Good Friday.' Some of these stories of fairies and heroes are well known (Irish versions of The Swan Princess and Cinderella, for example). Less familiar ones introduce enjoyable characters such as Lusmore the melodious hunchback and Jack Doherty the tippling fisherman. The storytelling is a delight, but it is the pictures that make this book truly special. Sharkey's palette of autumnal colours is exceptionally rich and luminous; she combines boldness with gentleness, and her humorous vision tames the monsters and endears us to the eccentrics. The collection ends with a cheeky self-referential joke: a story explaining how these tales were written down is illustrated by St Patrick carrying a copy of this very book under his arm." --The Sunday Times (London)"In his cogent introduction, Doyle gives a succinct overview of the significance of storytelling in the Irish cultural tradition, linking it to the present by references to the government-sponsored systematic collection of tales in the mid-1930s.... This little book is filled with amazing, beautiful illustrations and entertaining stories. Anyone interested in Irish culture and folk-lore will enjoy this book. However, while this book is a fun read for older children and adults, the content of one or two of the stories might be a little bit intense for younger children, so be sure to preview the stories before reading it to the little ones. I especially like the pronunciation guide in the front for Irish names and words, which can be very difficult, and the reference page at the end that explains the origins of each story. Also, my edition came with audio c-d's of the stories.

I saw this book in the library at Trinity College in Dublin Ireland when we were vacationing there last week. So I ordered it to read to my grand daughter when I returned. So far we have shared the first three stories and enjoyed them.

My 10 year old son loves listening to these stories ! The Irish voice and music make it fun and the tales are enjoyable!

My son enjoys this book and CD set. I really enjoy some of the stories, as well as the narrator's enthralling renditions. However some of the stories are a bit violent for my tastes.

A beautiful book that includes 2 CDs with the tales told by wonderful story tellers. My daughter loves these stories and listens to the over and over and the illustrations are beautiful.

I really wanted to like this, but the stories are really dark for children. Many stories have unresolved tragedy and very sad, bleak things happen to innocent characters. I suppose the book is being true to the folk tales, but bedtime stories these are not.

How sad was I to find that several of these stories are rehashes, or just Irish versions, of stories found in other cultures, like Cinderella. No kid needs another version of that tired yarn! I wanted fresh, interesting tales that would entertain me and my kid at storytime. Unlike the other Barefoot Books I own, this volume is dull in color and the illustrations, though attractive, are not kid-friendly. In the soul-cages, the richness of the descriptions are not mined by the illustrator, who might be more at home designing corporate clipart. SO disappointed. The poetry book I bought from Barefoot is so lush and full of such unusual poems that I show it to friends who come over!

#4,231 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

Emily Windsnap and the Pirate Prince is the 8th book in a series chronicling the adventures of Emily, a spunky half-mer (half human, half mermaid). Throughout this series we’ve witnessed her coming to terms with who she is, learning the history of her family, making best friends with a mermaid named Shona, and rescuing and meeting her half-mermaid boyfriend, Aaron. In each book, Emily has overcome life-threatening obstacles, saving mermaids, humans, and even the Sea King Neptune, who has inadvertently given her special powers that rival his own. The fandom is strong with this series — it has spanned 15 years, so parents and teachers who read this 15 years ago (when they were teens and tweens) are enjoying sharing their passion with the next generation as the more recent books were released. In addition to friendship and loyalty, these books strongly address finding where we belong (noted themes of racism and being mixed-race), conflict resolution, and finding your voice. In Emily Windsnap and the Pirate Prince, book #8, Emily is still only 13 years old and must face yet another shocking challenge that includes adventure, mystery, treasure, and young romance. She is with her mother on a fancy cruise when their ship is attacked by pirates. Aaron is missing and, when forced to return to their rooms, Emily is separated from her mother. Now Emily must find a way to slip away and discover as many details about the raid party before deciding whether to offer her services to the pirates in exchange for Aaron’s return. But what can Emily offer a ship of rowdy pirates who openly detest mermaids? It was easy to fall back into Kessler’s comfortable writing in this 8th book. Her scenes are so well described that I can vividly see it all in my mind. As is true of most of the books in this middle grade series, it could probably be a stand alone novel for newcomers. Nevertheless, I believe it’s helpful to know the history to understand who Emily, Aaron, and Shona are — at least books #1, #2, and #3. I’ll also mention that I read some of these books with my eyes and listened to others as audiobooks, so I can happily vouch for the audiobook rendition narrated by Finty Williams. This book in the series is a bit different for two reasons. First, Emily is separated from her mother, father, Aaron, Shona, and any other already-known Windsnap characters for most of the story. Second, there’s a bit of boyfriend conflict that I don’t recall happening to this extent in the 5 other books I read in this series. This even made me apprehensive and I had no idea how that would resolve until the very end. Otherwise, the book followed a similar pattern to the previous books in the series — with a clever, feisty, non-conforming Emily who, despite facing plenty of fantasy racism, is up to just about any task in order to save the day.My thanks to NetGalley and Candlewick Press for giving me an ARC of this book so that I could provide an honest review. Be sure to check out Liz Kessler’s website to learn more about her characters, her travels and inspiration for each book, the research that went into the books, and you can even take a quiz to discover “How Mer Are You?”.

I fell in love with this cover and had to read this mermaid tale! I had no idea before requesting this title that this is the eighth installment in this mermaid series, but it read great as a stand alone. Now that I know about this series, I do want to go back to the beginning and read the first one. This was a fun story and quick read. If you like mermaids and pirate adventures, you’d enjoy this book!
