The Step by Step series is colorful, straightforward and friendly. I'll admit, I've had fits with FrontPage 98. I've just never caught on. But, hearing good things about the 2002 edition, I upgraded. Know that the book that comes with the software from Micorsoft is *brief* so I knew I needed more help. I checked out a couple of other FP books but was suspect that their too-technical, no-illustrations content was not what I needed to get up and running. The SbS series is a good hand-holder and gave me the bigger picture perspective. I got my site up and am pleased. I did buy one more book for the more technical issues but I credit this pub for getting me going. As I upgrade to the XP versions, I will continue buying the Step by Step series.
Microsoft FrontPage has not been produced since version 2003 and if you need to edit an existing web page that was created in FrontPage this book may help you do that. Creating new web pages in FrontPage is not recommended at this time. My copy came with the instructional CD in an unopened envelope at the back of the book.
You follow along by rote like a robot with little or no explanation or understanding of what you are doing, and more important why. Many of the exercises assume you know what to do or leave much to speculate as to what steps to take (this is supposed to be a step by step) and often do not come out as shown or described which is extremely frustrating. If you need, as you will, to contact their e-mail address for support or a question, forget it. You don't want to wake them up.What you get is typical of MS's arrogance and couldn't care less.If you really want to learn FrontPage 2002, there are much better sources.Louis
This is an excellent book if you are starting to learn how to design Web pages. Make sure you follow each step. It is an excellent step by step book, which also shows pictures to make sure you are in the right dialog box, etc.
I just substituted my own files for the ones named in the book and had my web page up and running in just a few days. I liked the picutures of what to push on the screen. And I'm only up to the third chapter.
In the world of web design it is very important to make sure that you use a application that will enhance the overall outlook of the web page, my personal choice is FrontPage and along with that comes the idea of learning the application. This book is my choice for that job.In just over 325 pages I found a wealth of information that not only shows me how to use the program but also prepares me for the MOUS exam for Front Page 2002. The easy to follow along guidelines make learning a breeze and for those who can't afford formal classroom training this may be the answer.Within the 12 chapters you'll cover topics like creating the web site, lists, tables, graphics, building a web site from the ground up, web layouts and links. Also there is coverage of auto updating the web site, working with databases, management and publishing of the web site.Use of color photos enhanced the learning process because you can see the actual finished product before you get started. Along with tips and tricks the step by step instructions make building and creating web pages very easy.Built for the beginner this book is an excellent tool for web designer in all of us. The author has also included HTML coding examples to show the underlying world of web design. Overall this book is well worth the price.
If you're brand new to FrontPage, this is a decent place to begin the learning process. It's a lot cheaper than taking a $500 class, and more material is covered. I would say this is a good book for programmers who are just beginning to learn about web programming. But if you don't even know what HTML is, then go do some research, ask some friends, then come back and get this book if you're still interested. No matter what Microsoft says, computers are complicated and hard to learn for Joe Average. Microsoft has made web design about about as easy as possible with FrontPage, and this book is good at getting you started. Once you finish this book, you'll need to get one that digs deeper into the subject. I recommend FrontPage Developer's Guide by Mike Jennett. If, on the other hand, you want to become an expert, a genuine web guru, you should probably learn a tool other than FrontPage, such as Dreamweaver. Then again, REAL programmers don't need computer languages or development tools; they just use ones and zeroes! ;-)Good luck to you!
I agree with the reviewer who found this book confusing because there are errors in the instructions.Trying to use this book was extremely frustrating, and I finally gave up trying. Possibly Microsoft had the writers put it together using a beta version and then never had anyone edit it after the retail version was released. From now on, I'm going to try books first in the library before buying them. Interestingly, Step by Step for Excel 2000 is a good book.Best luck to everyone in learningFrontPage 2002,C. Smart
